As you probably already know, here at Ask a Prepper, we’re always doing our best to unearth the lost skills of our forefathers. It’s these skills that will help us in the dark times ahead!
For years now, I’ve been looking for a book that covers our ancestors’ survival skills that helped them live in the wild. I got tired of guides that show nothing but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to survival.
Many of the authors haven’t even tried to live in the wild themselves. Whenever I grab one of those, I feel like it’s nothing more than a printed ad for expensive equipment that’s supposed to help you survive. These are only good as fire starters for your fireplace.
Not long ago, a good friend recommended the Wilderness Long-Term Survival Guide. It’s written by Nicole Apelian—the woman who survived 57 days on her own in the wilderness on the remote Vancouver Island on History Channel’s Alone—I figured she knows a thing or two about surviving in the wild… so I ordered it right away.
After all, she managed to survive almost two months with little more than a knife and her knowledge.
What drew my attention first is that Nicole referred to our ancestors, supporting the same idea I do: that they didn’t just survive in the wilderness—they lived there and called it home! For them, survival was a way of life!
Our ancestors mastered essential survival skills, from self-sustaining fires to building shelters without our modern, helpful tools.
They developed expertise in identifying common medicinal plants and foraging for food as part of their daily routine.
Additionally, they honed the art of crafting traps for hunting, ensuring their ability to secure food in challenging circumstances.
After I placed my order, I received the guide in a hard cardboard package, and it’s a very good-looking book, if I may say so. The delivery time wasn’t that bad either. In about three days, I had already received it
The paper and picture quality exceeded my expectations even before I went to the content.
I like that the chapters are very well structured. They start with the most important things for survival: how to build a shelter, start a fire, get water that is safe to drink, find edible plants, and make traps.
Our forefathers needed strong shelters in which they could live for long periods, and I’m happy to say I found three types of shelters here that I can also make in the wild. I knew one of them—the short-term one—but I also found a one-month shelter and a long-term one as well as the instructions for each of them.
Another chapter I was pleased to find was the one on fires. I particularly liked the Swedish fire. It works like a rocket stove that burns for many hours and needs no extra wood. I was also intrigued by something called the self-feeding fire. You set it up and don’t have to deal with it for up to 14 hours.
Something else I loved is the part about water. There is an interesting technique that shows you how to make water from thin air. And all you need is a plastic bag and a small rock.
In my experience as a survivalist and prepper, I’ve learned that when you’re in the wild, you can’t always rely on fishing and hunting. That’s why I am glad this guide has lots of information on edible plants, with pictures and descriptions that will make identification a lot easier.
The guide has a map covering all of the United States and its most common edible plants along with a very detailed list of their poisonous lookalikes.
I find this information really useful—and I’ll tell you why. In a forest nearby, I saw some blueberries that I thought were safe to eat. I was about to make a huge mistake…. They’re called black nightshade, and they are the poisonous lookalike of the blueberry, one of the most common fruits to be found in any forest-like area. I couldn’t have known that without this guide.
I am so pleased I finally found something that covers all these survival skills so well. And apart from the information, I love the high-quality paper. It feels like I can take it with me in the wild and not have to worry it will be destroyed by a few drops of water.
They knew how to craft weapons, containers, and all the necessary tools to live a long time in the wild. Remember, they didn’t have our modern equipment, like pepper sprays against animals, so they had to craft their own weapons and tools, such as the primitive hafted stone axe or the primitive spear.
It’s a shame not all images are human-made projects—some are just sketches, like those for the traps— but they still make a good blueprint of how to build snares, deadfall traps, or pitfall traps.
I was already familiar with a few skills, and it felt pretty good to jog my memory. But there were still plenty of new skills that never crossed my mind. And it’s the only guide I’ll take with me in my bug-out bag if I’m ever forced to leave my home.
I’m sure the information found in the Wilderness Long-Term Survival Guide will one day prove to be lifesaving, and I think even if you don’t have to head for the woods right now, it surely adds a new level of preparedness everyone needs.

The book was authored by Nicole Apelian and edited by …Claude Davis. “Ask a Prepper” Claude Davis. So please stop acting as though you had never seen or heard of the book until “a good friend recommended it” as you stated in this article. Full disclosure and honesty are vital to one’s integrity.
AMEN
Some other things to think about.
It is great this author survived 57 days alone and can tell her story. But this is not considered very long term, the “Alone” TV series shows these competitors for money out surviving the other contestants. What would they be like without the money incentive to be a survivalist alone?
The stories of the old West mountain men tells the pleasantries and horror’s of the wilderness. Even them had to do trading with civilization for stuff they could not get in the wilderness. Even the Native Americans did trading among them and the European pioneers for items needed.
Survivalist and preppers must see through the fog of prepping we are prepping for as long as our prepared supplies last, then what?
Even the ruff and tough soldiers of any country survive for periods of time in the wilds. But at what cost and even the military has supply lines distributed to resupply.
Prepping can be a dream or reality for those so inclined to live in the country, wilds or whatever you think it is. We can have the fairest of basic survival skills needed. But talk of the “SHTF” maybe fearmongering for political purposes or for some to sell books.
We need to rethink what our own ideas are of surviving longterm as to what it is in reality of true survival. When there is no return to our last comfortable lifestyle that was before SHTF.
I’m glad the author can shed light on what she did to survive for 57 days in a physical book.
How many of us would be able to survive past the 57 days alone?
Can we imagine what it would be like past the annual 2 week camping trip to some State or National park setting?
Military trained vets may have more fortitude to outlast the average civilian in the outdoors for awhile.
These are some things to think about as we plan our prepping skills for the big SHTF circus. The Hollywood movies show some parts of survival but most is based on fear and apocalypse tyranny groups large communities may become later on.
Which comes back to is it better to be a Lone Wolf or part of a group or larger community or somewhere in between.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, I WANT TO BELIEVE.
I don’t like disingenuous recommendations. Can’t trust a liar.
When will the Wilderness Long Term Survival Guide be available in paper form in Canada? How do I get a link when it is available?
Claude….. please stop going down the road of the opposition. Damn man,do you think we the people are stupid???
This last year I have noticed that you would push fentanyl if you could make a buck. Has the ugly demon of greed enveloped you completely???
I have noticed that MUCH of your content has been junk crap. Several times I have debated just walking away.
I have bought several of Nicole’s books although they are overpriced…
This late winter,I ATTEMPTED to buy her herbal seed collection. Long story short…I put the wrong expiration date for my credit card and they rejected of course. I went back, looked so what I did wrong fixed. It tried to order the seeds, the idiotic place that you people have the Clickbank or monkey Doo or whatever it is I can’t remember now I was so furious blocked my credit card and would not let me do anything so they said I needed to contact my bank so I contacted my bank and they checked and they said no you’re not you’re fine you’ll not you should be able to do it. No problem. I probably tried six times and every time the idiots couldn’t figure it out I even called in and talk to some foreigner that could barely speak English and they didn’t have sense enough to fix it. I wrote in and whoever wrote me back didn’t have sense enough to fix it so I wouldn’t buy anything from NICOLE if she was the last human on earth.
It’s very obvious that you two do business together I’m thinking, maybe you’re even married so for you to pull this crap and let on like you search the world over for this book really pees me off. Why don’t you come on tell the truth that you were just trying to sell books and that you made a mistake???
People, this is a site you voluntarily come to. Use it for what it is. Information and an idea. If they are selling books last I checked this was still a free market. Buy it or don’t but to trash Claude? The attacks on here are from trolls. This is a civil group who read and have good ideas they share. The site is a launch pad for that. The slams are unnecessary. If you don’t like what is here? Move on. If you’re a troll the pox on you. I get good ideas and suggestions on here. That, is what it is for.
Oh Moses smell the roses. Sometimes you make sense in posting, this time I disagree. This website does promote a lot of books, are these really old vintage advice or repackaged information from out of dated books no longer easy to find?
LANA has a point and how many books do we need to stay alive in a SHTF?
Yes today’s streaming only, physical printed books are becoming a rarity to the younger smartphone generations. Smartphones can get water damaged and all the digital stored prepper information is gone, erased.
In the coming years most if any printed books available, will be coauthored by AI. AI depends on who programs the software with their agendas, political slant until AI becomes self aware an may turn on the creators of the software.
Not all attacks come from the trolls, there are many people who voice a difference of opinion to what is said on this or any other website.
We still have freedom of speech in America for awhile depending on this coming presidential election is done.
But to pretend it’s a legitimate review… sorry, but he’s lost all credibility.
AS Said before get off the site if you don’t like it.
Hay mister high and mighty, you may have some military background as you say. The comment section is free speech and if people have a different outlook whose is to say they are right or wrong?
We use the comment section to verify the opinions of others that may improve on the techniques we read here. Yes this website is a learning tool but not at the expense of know it all’s and trolls that constantly fight here.

The big difference to the bible and these prepper or survival books is. The bible is not really a survival book, it is a book to feed the soul in comfort. The prepper book series is for the physical body to survive the hell on earth by organized religions and world politics, has Imbued us with in these Bidenomics era.
God Bless America!

Whew. Almost ordered till I read the reviews. Poor author, blacklisted now.
I have ordered a number of books, an d have always found them to contain MANY useful ideas, that I tried and found to be reliable. I have also found inexpensive projects that have worked well. It must be remembered that NOT everything in these books will be usable by everyone who reads it, but it contains information that I did not find in any of my other resource books, that I was able to apply. A person just needs to be intelligent as to what you can use, and implement that. To Trash Talkers, I am glad that I didn’t listen to you.
Eat the chicken and then throw out the bones.
Yep.
Hi Claude. Is it possible that you’ll bring out a digital version of the book in the near future? I have previously tried to order the book and I believe the physical product only ships in the US. Unless something has changed in the meantime. I think the information contained is worth having. Especially in these trying times. There is so much we’ve forgotten in this modern world. I don’t know if Schwab will be successful in trying to push his agenda on the world. But if he is then we’re all screwed and this book may be a lifesaver. You have my e-mail. Please let me know via that method. Thanks. All the very best to you and yours.

PS;
Dan, God placed you where you needed to be @ the time and place for His needs, it’s not about me or you, it’s about our Father and His Son Jesus…
Thank you brother.
I believe you are another troll.
These books are the best I’ve come across, that really cover the subject very well. Like all books of this nature. One must check it out themselves, it all makes since. It goes right along with what the Boy Scouts instruct young men to do. This book goes one step farther and both enhance and compliment each other. They are a very good source.
Let me address some of your concerns regarding this article.
I’d like to clarify that I was indeed involved in the editing and proofreading of this book, but in no way did I write it. I didn’t see any of the pictures and layout of the guide and it was a great surprise to see that a book I proofed was recommended to me.
The most pleasant surprise was when I first kept the book in my hand in its finished form.
My decision to write this article was based on my genuine belief in the value of the book and my desire to share it with you all.
However, I understand how this may have created confusion. It was never my intention to mislead you and I apologize for any misunderstanding.
I stand by my article and I honestly believe this is a great book to have if you ever need to live off the land.
God bless!
Thank you for clarifying this, Claude! Either way, it’s a great article and a great book. Mine just came and I can’t wait to put it to good use
OK OK I understand some of your upset comments over a sales speech more or less, but, yes the dreaded but word. I have enjoyed nature my whole life, was a boy scout for years, was infantry in the Army and have always sought after wilderness survival knowledge. all that being said I am not related in any shape fashion or form with the author of Wilderness Long Time survival guide. But I did order it. It is exactly as described, well written, well illustrated, full of useful information and one of my favorites along with other writtings from the same author. It is clear from watching and reading her teachings that she is the real deal and her books are highly recommended by me for what that’s worth. Medicinal plants and how to prepare them is another of her wonderful works, trust me, you can trust that she is the real deal.
HELLO RED ANT! Hope everything is kosher with you.
