It doesn’t matter how prepared you are; when SHTF comes, there are going to be things that you are going to need which are outside your stockpiles.
Often these will be the raw materials to construct other projects to aid in your continued survival, which would have been impractical to keep a supply on hand.
So once law and order have broken down, and we find ourselves in a proper post-apocalyptic situation, it is time to get creative with our resource gathering.
I have spent a fair bit of time thinking about good spots to scavenge after SHTF, especially when watching post-apocalyptic tv shows and movies.
Disclaimer: Scavenging in any of the places listed below is illegal. It should only be considered in situations where there is a complete breakdown of society. What I present here is a thought experiment regarding what would be the best locations to scavenge in the unlikely event of a widespread apocalypse.
Industrial Areas
If you require any materials for a construction project or DIY survival items, start by scavenging through the yards and shops of the nearest industrial parks.
There is likely to be a wide range of businesses with an equally wide range of materials ready for scavenging.
Related: 11 Looter-Attracting Items You Should Immediately Hide When SHTF
You’ll have access to many grades and sizes of steel, parts, hardware, lumber, and equipment.
Since these areas will not have large stockpiles of food, medical supplies, or water, you will probably have a limited amount of competition as you scavenge for building materials.
Waste Transfer Stations / Garbage Dumps
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you are looking for items commonly tossed in the trash, the local transfer station or garbage dump may be worth a look.
If you can find the specific items you need, you could find things that can be repurposed to suit your needs. Many of these places have recycling areas where you can find metal, plastics, wood, or other valuable materials.
Hospitals/Clinics/ Doctors’ Offices / Veterinary Clinics
These locations will be stripped of all medications and narcotics almost immediately. The masses of looters will empty all the shelves probably on the first day of a disaster.
However, even when the staff of these places has abandoned the building, there will be many medical supplies left over that the average looter will not see as having any value.
Bandages, gauze, dressings, suture kits, IV bags, blankets, pillows, and bedding will be left behind.
⇒ 10 Medical Supplies You Need To Stockpile Before It’s Too Late
If you find that you need supplies to treat wounds, checking these spots is probably going to be an excellent option to restock your supplies.
Self-Storage Facilities
Self-storage facilities have hundreds of storage lockers which usually contain people’s useless or unwanted stuff. However, in an SHTF situation, you might be able to find items that you could repurpose or use for barter.
Also, people will need warm clothes and blankets when the grid goes down, and there should be a lot of them in storage lockers.
Distribution Centers
You should know where the major distribution centers are in your local area.
Even though they will be ransacked within a day or so of the onset of an SHTF scenario, there will still be goods that looters leave behind, which may be helpful.
For example, think of all the products your local Amazon distribution center has on their shelves. Most of these would seem to be useless to people who are starving, but to preppers with full bellies, the discarded goods signal endless possibilities.
Restaurants
These will be hit by looters almost immediately as well. Still, they will probably leave behind shelf-stable foods they cannot prepare because they need an off-grid cooking method.
Flour and other dry goods, oils, spices, and other goods will probably be left behind by looters.
Ports And Airports
The goods that come into our country need to pass through either airports or ports before they get to the store shelves. As a result, there will be thousands of containers that the average person would not think to check. This could potentially leave hundreds of thousands of items you may find helpful after SHTF.
Schools
Most schools will have emergency supplies, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, and other valuable items that most people would overlook.
Related: 50 High Value Items To Stockpile For When SHTF
In addition, high schools will often have metal shops, woodworking shops, kitchens, and automotive shops, which would contain tools, parts, and other items that you would find helpful.
Schools will also be another location that a lot of people would overlook in their quest for supplies.
Hardware Stores
When the local hardware store is looted, those doing the looting will be looking to grab whatever they can carry, which looks valuable.
They will ignore the nails, screws, bolts, lumber, and other items you need to build whichever DIY survival project you wish.
The items for maintaining and repairing your home’s plumbing and electrical will also be largely untouched by the looting public.
Malls
For the most part, the retail stores inside of a mall will contain little in the way of useful goods.
That being said, if you are scavenging for raw materials to make clothing, looking for things to repurpose, or need a functional pair of shoes, the mall might be worth a look.
Most malls will be stripped of jewelry, electronics, and anything else of monetary value in the first few days of a disaster.
Imagination is the only thing that is going to inhibit your scavenging options after SHTF.
It is well worth your time to keep your eyes open now, so that you can find and make mental notes of locations where you would target in the event that you need to scavenge some supplies.

Red ant did you miss the part that you are scavenging and WHO PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY?
Aside from the probability that you might get shot while looting err “scavenging ”
Preppers should have enough to lock the gate and stand ready to defend their family.
My family will truly be able to take care of the homestead, while I am out scavenging and not stealing.
If you do not no the difference from scavenging and stealing, then yes you need a dose of beat down or worse.
If not you, then who will go and look for what you will need when time goes on and supplies get lower and lower.? How long do you think this time that is coming, will last.?
Where will you replace you supplies , when you have nothing left.?
We will all need to reup supplies, @ some time. Yes… If so then where.?

Your very clever Red ant.
Carry on with your bad self. I’ve been fired upon by hidden attackers doing my Medic job in the sandbox. I KNOW you cannot go out looking for supplies without the excellent chance you’re going to not get home. No magic helo’s to carry you to the field hospital, just you gut shot at the Self-Storage.
AND FOR WHAT? A few boxes of old clothing? Wow, awesome. Maybe an empty or burned-out restaurant you hiked too risking an ambush.
Very Clever, sir.
Carry on.
Michael
You as well…
I will not waste my time on storage units. You.?
Stay sharp.
Hopefully your family is prepared as well. You dont just prepare one person, also by the time you need to scavenge many will be out by then, If you live where and like I do you are used to repurposing and finding, scavenging and if you have not checked out your resources you should.
Right on! When you are prepared, that’s a scene to avoid at all cost. As the benefits do not out weigh the risks, it’s pure stupidity and stupidly does not help one’s survival!
Well if a complete break down happens then everyone and that includes preppers will at some point have to scavange that is unless you are super rich and have everything under the sun stocked.
I can build anything. To do that materials are needed that because of my present financial situation I can not stock. So I will scavange. There is a big difference between scavanging and stealing. First scavanging only happens when a complete breakdown of our society happens. So any materials that you need for survival and take is not stealing unless you take it from some guarded place or from someone. If a place is left unguarded then the owner knows it will be looted or used by scavengers. I will not steal but I will scavange.
As to defense of my stuff while I am out well I have a bunch of children, grand children and every one of them knows how to shoot as good or better than me and I am good. They will defend our place probably better than I could.
Your situation is what will decide when you will have to go scavenging. But you will eventually have to scavange.
Most people, when they talk about scavenging, are talking about WAY after SHTF. The looting and rioting are over. A lot of people are dead already from one cause or another. You never go on your own and you never go unarmed. You always have your head on a swivel and do a security check before entering. It’s not a game. Example: If a tree fell on the corner of my house, I need something more than a tarp to fix it. I don’t have the materials just laying around, but I know where to get them. In the dump in my County, there are sheets and sheets of tin roofing I can pick up. I could check at the local hardware store to see if I could scrounge up so fasteners, maybe a tube of caulk and/ or a sheet of plywood and boards. If the owner is still keeping watch I might be able to barter for some of it, if not I can get what I need for the repair. Those things are not ‘valuable’ to the average person after SHTF. There’s not going to be some self appointed warlord sitting on it hoping to become the king of the land. Nope, those bums will be going for the food, guns/ammo, etc. I already know not to go to the Sam’s distribution center because some armed gang will be sitting on it. But, the hardware store or dump? Naw. They could care less about them. Same with the school, feed stores and even the post office. There will be stuff there that has been mailed and hasn’t been delivered. Heck, the VA sends their meds via USPS. You never know until you look.
couple of problems with your list of locations – several of them, like the mall and warehouses, are going to be simply taken over by marauders and you’ll be walking into a major beatdown …
and – anytime you decide to raid a home or private owned business >>> the owner can and probably will defend it – you’ll either be dead or a murderer defending yourself …..
“Scavenging in any of the places listed below is illegal. It should only be considered in situations where there is a complete breakdown of society.” >>> this describes the rioting & looting that has become commonplace – your EXCUSE or one of the other creative BS excuses isn’t acceptable – if questioned I’m sure they consider themselves “scavengers” ….
Hahah what?
Illegal? Haha you will be the first victim of economic collapse! Your thought process is already flawed-
Good luck Sheep!
so much for you being an actual prepper – a welfare scum sucking ANTIFA/BLM type most likely >>> thinks “society” owes them because their Mommy didn’t bother getting them hoovered in a red garbage sack ….
I just hope it’s some 90 year old granny that blows you right back out the door you busted in to loot – hopefully she’s off target a bit and the arm you lost gives you time to experience the pain ….
leeches like you need a thorough cleansing from society before the grannies of the world need to worry about you …..
I would like to see what people are like, when a week passes by and then a month and then a year. What would you be like at that time. A full-blown scavenger, for anything that will get you by another day. Or be a fallower of the antichrist.
No one can even begin to fathom what it will be like when it does happen.
Say all you want to.
You will become what you hate today.
Do any of you think that anyone will give a rat a$$ about you or your family, @ that time.
IT’s illegal to steal or kill today but they still do it.
I am telling Y’all that if you think you can handle a bunch of people that want what you have, you will not stop them, they will keep coming until there is no more of them or you are dead.
Some of us are good people and will help others, then there are those that will love the darkness of this time, too KiIl, Steal and Destroy.
Better worry about them. I will have my sights on them… lol
Just better be ready for anything, because no one will care at that time… very few, maybe.
I was told also, that the Truth Hurts. sorry…

There’s a writer who explores the juxtaposition between people and major change – Kim Stanley Robinson. His Gold Coast books are a good exploration of these questions. There’s a major SHTF situation in the US and what happens in the aftermath. These books are an easier read than his huge chunky Mars trilogy etc, and worth looking at. He dives deep into both the sociology/pscyhology and the economics (read New York 2140 if you are ready for something chunkier than The Gold Coast) and the politics (Antarctica, and the Mars Trilogy) and the science (all of them). He researches deeply, ponders fruitfully near future events.
It’s after contemplating things, taking on board this author’s thoughts, and other sci fi/near future ideas etc that I figure that the better prepared I am now the better life will be. If I have plans to go scavenging I’m better off to prep now, or wait a LONG time after SHTF. No looting in the weeks/months after a major event, when adrenaline is high, demand is hungry and people are vengeful and angry. If it’s a project that requires sheet metal plan now for it, or realise it’s everywhere and you don’t have to raid a hardware store for it (fridge sides, roofing tin, fencing tin etc all repurpose-able). Don’t plan on looting!
Red ant you are correct. I will scavange but I will not steal. I will not break into a place that is occupied and you can tell if a place is occupied or not. Scavanging means looking for certain items you need to survive such as clothing, building materials to build anything you might need such as a Dutch oven or a cellar.
As to helping others I will if I can. But that comes along as a big risk. So I will help where I can without risking everything.

Yes, we will not steal from others but we will scavenge.
Helping others will be up to the situation at that time.

Unlikely you will be out scavenging day one.Anyone out and about after any period of time is going to be dealing with a leveling up of people who have gotten as far as they have using their skill set…hopefully by the time you have to scavenge most of the others have been taken out. In all instancees you have to be smarter…quicker and hopefully realize you probably cant hide forever and will need to make these runs, know what to look for, how to find them without being found and traced back and observe, develop a plan and act according. Limiting contact of any kind is always a plus
Best place to scavenge will be retirement communities in blue states. Old liberal Boomers are typically unarmed anti gun tards, intoxicated, and will be easy pickings as their hysteria becomes panic. Now, under normal circumstances, I wouldnt advocate theft, death, and possibly cannibalism. But survival of the fittest will be the law of the land very, very soon.
pretty much ALL of these are just stealing NOT scavenging. Most of the items listed you should already have especially if you’re a prepper. Why put yourself or family in danger to steal?? Usually have decent articles, not this one.
Kevin
This article is a dam good article! Talks about what “you” will be doing in the future when all this stuff hits, at your doorstep.
Yes, you should have most of all you will need by now, but when times go to the waste side, then you will become what you will need to be at that time. No matter what. Especially if you have a family.
(Just come out and say it), you too, will become a killer when they come for you or your family.
You will also steal, when it comes time…

you’re 100% correct guy – ditto on your courage to say so >>> this usual Michael article is perfect for the lazy assholes that call themselves preppers – reinforces their belief that the Hollyweird zombie script is the perfect Prepper Plan for them – go to The Mall and throw a toilet thru the window to the ultimate survival ….
I agree, Kevin. It seems that the low IQers will try to justify whatever actions that they feel they need to take, because they did not prepare for the moment in advance. “I need it to survive” – well so do the people you are stealing from. I will have no mercy on thieves stealing from me.
I truly fill that only a few will go and steal from others that post on this site.
We that are posting about this article will not be the one’s that will be stealing from you or anyone else.
Some of us are better then that.
A true Prepper will be a good prepper.

Brings up an important point that hasn’t been fully talked about here very much. Yes, every single thing you come across in your travels that isn’t on property that you personally own, IS SOMEBODY ELSE’S STUFF, unless it’s some sort of government property, say game from a state park, technically you’re not stealing as you are a citizen of the United States and you pay taxes that bought that land, fed those critters, etc, etc. But lets say ur at an Amazon Warehouse and you find a case of canned green beans. Well, you don’t have any way of determining ownership of that item. Technically, it may be the property of the shipper, receiver or possibly the shipping company. You don’t know, can’t know, will likely never know, and what’s more important is the fact you shouldn’t waste one second on thinking about who’s property it is in a truly complete breakdown of society as you cannot compensate the owner If you could determine ownership. Now if that same case of canned peas came from a house you got into that clearly is occupied by someone, or you had to run somebody off or threaten to kill them, or worse, then yes that is stealing. You’re taking food out of their mouth so yours can keep on chewing and swallowing. If, right now, you’re on a public beach, state park or walking down the street and find that same case of canned green beans you can pick it up and walk away with it as you aren’t stealing it from anyone. The beach or sidewalk doesn’t sell green beans. Obviously, they’re somebody’s green beans, but as you have no way to determine who lost them, you are within your rights to take possession of them. And that’s in todays world. Right now. It’s called “finding” something. I can think of several things that i semi-regularly “find” that i take possession of and keep. Give ya an example. Went to a “pick-n-pull” salvage yard and in the process of looking in vehicles for needed parts i found a long red box that had a set of Warning triangles in it. Piled em in with my parts at the checkout counter and the checker just shoved them aside and said take them with ya, as they don’t sell those and they’re just junk in the way for them. Cost me only the effort to pick them up and pack them out. I didn’t “steal” from anyone and got them totally for free. In a complete breakdown of society you will still know if you are stealing or not. At that same pick n pull place i generally find tools in vehicles that i’m removing parts from. I chuck them in my toolbox and roll on as there’s literally no way to determine who’s socket or wrench that is. Could be owners, towing company’s, repo guys wrench and in any case in a salvage yard the entire vehicle is the pick n pull’s property so now you have the question of did the wrench show up after the vehicle did making it the property of some other customer who inadvertently left it or is it the yards tool? Pretty much everybody just throws the socket or whatever in their toolbox and rolls on. The pick n pull has a medium size tote full of misc sockets that they loan out to anybody who needs a socket, if there’s one in the tote. Anyway at SOME POINT, especially as the years roll on, regardless of the situation at your home base, secure or not, the vast majority of people will go foraging/scavenging/stealing to see if they can find/beg/barter something for something else, etc. This article is illustrating places that you may be able, along with everybody else, to find items that you NEED to continue surviving. If you’re taking siding off of a house that people are living in, you’re stealing, if you’re taking siding off of a damaged, or clearly unoccupied house, then you’re foraging.
I think this article is written for an apocalyptic event. A real SHTF situation, not just a severe depression with shortages. A complete collapse of society. That changes the game and changes the rules.
Zombies aside, the Walking Dead was not really about zombies, it was about survival and human behavior in a complete breakdown of society. That’s what made the show interesting. Would you? Could you? Should you? Moral questions that are personal and hard to answer because none of has ever been faced with anything remotely relevant.
Having a remote location to live off the land with hard work and your wits and however you’ve prepped is a solid plan for some people. Some of can and will, most people would fail miserably. Most people will need a community.
As far as stealing, in a true breakdown of society: abandoned goods and materials are reasonable foraging opportunities. Waste not, want not.
I live in NyC and I will be going into the sewer system storm drains to navigate out of the city. I figure I can stay underground for a while, subsiding on rat carcasses and drinking murky rain water. Theres a network of tunnels that can access various facilities of importance.
Herp A Derp, I hope you have scouted these storm drains ahead of time. I haven’t ever been on them, but the things I have read about them make me suspect this isn’t a very viable plan.
Rat carcasses are probably not the most healthy food choice, from all the disease potential, and all my life I have been told and shown that we should only be drinking the very cleanest water we can get.
Murky rain water in a storm sewer is ALMOST the dirtiest water a person is likely to run across. Surely you have seen all the information about filtering, sanitizing, boiling, or other methods of obtaining water that is even relatively safe to consume.
If you are using the tunnels just to get out of the city, you can probably carry enough water and food to sustain yourself without relying on LOCALLY SOURCED stuff, no?
I won’t even go into the topic of some of the other folk who make the underground structures their living areas full time,,,,,,,,,,,, talk about out of the frying pan into the fire? UGGHHH!
He’s just bluffing!
Herpaderp are you carrying a reverse osmosis filter down there with you? Or planning to suck all that heavy metal in with the water? It doesn’t matter how much you boil it, the heavy metals and other chemical contaminants need to be cleaned out… or you are going to be very sick fairly fast. Rain runoff through storm sewers in NYC has to be some of the filthiest in the world, when you factor in chemical contamination on top of human waste. Also when the rubbish systems fairly (and sewage) all this will be dumped in the street by people (look at past history) so you’ll be dealing with cholera and dysentery and hepatitis down there very quickly on top of everything else. Go up … not down! Find an industrial building or three of absolutely no looting value, no interest to anyone… and with a fortifiable roof. Then you can collect rain water up there, set up a garden out of view, live very quietly and discretely… and it’s easier to defend, cleaner, and you are less likely to be ambushed.
Sounds like a good plan – stay in the NYC sewer …you’ll be the only one in there …CHUD
Lol good luck is all I have to say. If you don’t think the government will own the majority of this you’re nuts.
I think it greatly depends upon the population of your area. In an area of large population I would probably not venture out. In the area I’m in there’s a lot of those particular targets mentioned in the article but a very small population. They’re also a well armed and very polite population.
Not telling
If you take from self storage lockers, you are stealing from someone else. They may be expecting to use those items for themselves and you are taking from them that ability to survive. You become just like those LEO’s you say will just use their guns to take from anyone who preps. Are you going to become what you, yourself, are protecting your loved ones from?
Restaurants and stores: if from small ‘mom and pop’ stores, you are stealing from someone. Chain restaurants and stores, well, maybe fair game.
Everything else, maybe, if the SHTF scenario has gone on for a long time.
I personally think that if right after SHTF, taking from these is wrong. If, after a year, well, maybe it’s ok, but still it is just LOOTING. Like everyone here says they will protect their property at the end of a gun or worse, so too, may the people that own such places choose to do. Yes, we will all want to survive and keep our families safe, but have you thought about those who own the stuff you are going to be looting?
Large corporations, well, no one knows who owns that stuff, as Richard Williams mentions, but smaller businesses you are stealing from another person just like yourself.
Remember, we do not want to become like those we are trying to protect ourselves from.
Survival, yes, Protecting yourself from those who would kill you…but also remember there is a moral code …that nothing can erase, not even a SHTF scenario, if you are a Godly person.
Please be nice here, EVERYONE has the right to their opinion. Maybe they see something you don’t or another angle.
I know many will thumbs down this comment, and that is their right. I just feel that some things should not be on our list of things to do right away …
If this blog has become just a format for advocating doing what everyone here has been planning to protect their families from, well…..then it has gone too far.
Carol L your thinking in terms of society coming back with in a short time period. If a apocalypse type event happens it will be years and years before society returns to normal if it ever does. You are correct in it is stealing if you run out first thing and take what ever you think you need. But if after a month if things have not started returning to normal then it is the long haul you will have to prepare for and scavenging will be a have to thing. I have been an honest man and will continue to be even after a event happens but I will scavange, Hunt even though it is against the law to hunt on someone elses land now but there is no laws in a complete break down there is just what each person considers right and wrong. Ask yourself is it right or wrong for you to go hunting to kill game for your table? If someone owns that property but lives 200 miles away then I do not think it is wrong. Same thing applies to ownership of buildings if the person is not there protecting it then who knows who owns it and how far away they are. If they are 25 miles away then they in an event like this will not be able to return to it because of the danger in returning. So if you need something from it to help you survive do you think they would be grudge you that. If I owned a place that I could not defend and this type event happened I would not say a word about someone taking what they needed and I do not think any owners in this situation would either if they are true to cultures up bringing.
As I have been monitoring this site I am convinced that in a SHTF scenario, there is only one true rule.
EVERY MAN/WOMAN FOR THEMSELF!
Unless you had the means to acquire some very remote piece of property on the backside of some mountain and were able to supply with all the necessities to live the pioneer life then the chances of you living a free yet meaningful life is the stuff of fantasies.
The life expectancy of a lone male in a SHTF scenario is 1.3 years. The life expectancy of a lone female is longer because she does not need to worry about being killed outright by any heterosexual males.
What I have also learned is preppers greatest fear is that they will be attacked by hordes of people trying to survive, which is a valid fear and if the horde were to attack one, two maybe even five at a time a thoroughly prepared and healthy prepper may survive a few such attacks. More realistically before the horde faces actual starvation in towns and cities they will form “scavenger missions” to be sent out to the surrounding countryside and to bring back any and all items useful to survival. And to use any means necessary. Their scavenger forces will number in the tens, hundreds THOUSANDS!
As far as women encountered by these scavengers, their lives are not in danger. As far as Men go, be they prepper, scavenger, soldier, policeman, pastor, priest, doctor, lawyer or fire chief, women will be valued for their fuckability, not their edibility.
Jeez, I think I just talked myself into becoming a scavenger!
You are wrong in several areas. First off mens life expectancy will not be 1.3 years because just how many people do you think will survive for two year in this event? It has been said by an ex Homeland security official that if the electricity fails for the USA that the first 2 weeks the majority(90%) of the population of the cities will die from lack of water, food and diseases. Some will leave and they will survive for about a month. So the majotity of the population will die in the first month and maybe after that has happened men might have a 1.3 year survival rate.
Now for women you have stated women will have a better survival rate then men but will they? Men take what they want will kill those women to prevent them from telling their men folk because if one of my family women folk gets raped I will hunt the bastard down and kill him. Same goes for most men who have families. Also if I see a woman being raped then I will shoot first and ask questions later.
There is many wholes in what you have said. I do believe you need to rethink some of what you said.
As for it being everyone for themselves that will not be the case for people who understand what survival is about. Those people that don’t understand will die pretty fast.
The people you think that will be sent out to Scavange(which is not the word I would use but to raid) will be small numbers because logic says if you send 100 people out those people will eat the food they find before coming back etc. So it will be smaller numbers and say 20 people attack my place well there will be a bunch of graves dug and mine might be one of them but there will be a bunch of them right along side me. I have ARs, shot guns with 00 buck and know how to make napalm bottles so they best not attack my people. I will use every defensive item to stop them.
Dreaded
I am not disagreeing on some of your statements, but as far at “womenfolk” are concerned, as depraved as our society has become, I find it very easy to believe that the women will be raped, and those that are considered good or subservient will be held captive as the Indian tribes did back when. If any are considered too much of a bother, then they will be killed. Young boys and girls will be taken and used as free labor or barter items.
I hope I don’t have to witness any of the nastiness that is about to hit our communities, but like you, I WILL send someone to meet Jesus.
It seems to me that most of the protest comments are coming from people with the mindset that bad times will be short lived and the Government will come to the rescue. Disregarding the possibility that it was the Government who developed the meltdown to begin with. I can see well prepared preppers who have planned for 3, 6, 9 or even 12 months of self preservation suddenly realizing that help isn’t coming from the Government. It is then that many will choose to join in with “ruthless outlaw groups” just for self survival. Then there are others who will return to the early days of America. They will move when danger starts getting close and will only stay in well concealed areas with cover. Relying on hand made weapons and traps for both survival and protection. When the “Nomads” start roaming for survival purposes those who thought to bunker down will have long been dealt with by ruthless thugs who believe stealing beats preparing. Nobody is saying take off running as soon as the SHTF but if you couldn’t survive a plane crash in the middle of nowhere with nothing then I am sorry to inform you that as time passes so will the life of those who have chosen to trust your leadership and your own life. No body said rob the helpless, we’re talking things like forgotten water in hot water heaters just for a simple example. Moving without detection, observation to be aware of activities before entering an area to decide appropriate measures, IE blending in or wide girth. Come on preppers prep for an undefined amount of time. Supplies will run out and will need to be replaced and most importantly must be able to grab it and get it if the situation requires. A hide out away from the beaten path with cover and concealment would be my choice if I was required to scavenge rather then drag my family along into potential danger. But believe one thing for sure, those fantastic provisions that you have bragged about storing up will not be forgotten by those who have observed your efforts but ignored their own.
