Today I’m going to show you how to make a hydrogen generator. Its design is simple, and it could definitely be helpful when SHTF. Of course, the version I’m going to build today is really just to give you an idea that you can improve upon. Let’s get started!
Related: Tools You Will Need When SHTF
First, you’ll need to gather all the materials we will be using:
- A bottle
- A jar
- A soldering gun, solder, and soldering paste
- A glue gun
- Razor blades
- A needle
- IV tubing
- Wire
- A pencil
- A leather hole punch tool
- Scissors
- A ruler
- Sandpaper
- A lighter
- A kebab stick
- A hammer
- A box cutter
- Pliers
Step One: Cleaning Off and Soldering the Razor Blades
Grab the razors and the sandpaper. Start rubbing gently but firmly against both sides of the razors, making sure to clean them well. You will need to scrape off the top layer so that the solder will stick to it.
It should look something like this when you’re done.
Cover both sides of the newly cleaned razors with soldering paste.
Using your solder gun and solder, put a line of solder onto the razor blades.
You don’t need to place too much; it’s only there to make soldering the wires to it easier. Do this same process with nine more to get ten in total.
Step Two: Connecting the Razors
First grab the box cutter and the wires, cutting them up into 1.5-inch pieces.
Next place some solder onto the wire with the soldering gun.
Grab the ruler and cut some lines into it at every 0.15 inches, placing the razor blades onto them and securing them together with the glue from the glue gun. Finally, cut the ruler shorter so it will be able to fit into the jar.
Place all 10 onto the ruler, following the same idea.
Bend the small soldered wire pieces so they can connect the razor blades together. After that, connect them to the blades using the solder on both the razor blade and the wires. Make sure to create two wire lines (for me, the red was the positive side, and the yellow was the negative), one connecting to every second blade and one connecting to every first.
Finally, solder separate pieces of wire onto the two wires, and connect them based on the colors (in my case, red goes with red, and yellow with yellow). Using the glue gun, attach them to the ruler.
Step Three: Connecting Everything
Cut the IV tubing at the drip chamber, cutting the side that connects to your hand and leaving the side that connects to the IV bag. I used a straight saw blade from a hand saw, but you can cut it with anything.
Drill a hole into it with a size of 0.4 inches. I used a wood drill bit to drill it out, but you can use anything.
Grab the lid of the jar, and cut a hole into it that’s the same size as the drip chamber so it can fit through it.
Create two more holes that will allow the wires to come out.
Glue the razor blade ruler to the bottom of the lid, behind the hole for the drip chamber.
Glue the drip chamber onto the hole that was made for it so that the hole made on it earlier faces downward.
Cut the tubing into a size suitable for you; mine was a little longer than I needed, so I shortened it.
Using the leather punch tool, punch a hole into the middle of the bottle cap.
Glue the kebab stick to the end of the tube. This will give the tubing more stability and will stop it from curling upward while underwater.
Next, grab the tube you worked on and the tube you cut off of the drip chamber. With the help of glue, connect the two pipes and the bottle cap together, pushing the one with the stick through so it lands at the bottom of the bottle while keeping the other at the top.
Place the needle at the end of the other tube.
Now all you need to do is connect everything.
Fill both the jar and the bottle with water. Place the bottle cap on top of the bottle, and place the jar cap on the jar. Put a few tablespoons of salt into the jar; this helps to speed up the process.
To make the system work, you need, of course, some electricity. Using too much could fry the whole system, while using too little will cause the generator to not provide up to its full potential. The ideal amount is 5–12 volts and around two amps. The best thing to use for this system is a simple phone charger.
Now let’s try it out. The concept relies on simple chemistry, more specifically, electrolysis. Because of this, the water inside the jar starts to bubble out. The drip chamber collects all the hydrogen and then delivers it to the bottle, where it runs through the water and travels out of the syringe.
Hope you enjoyed making your own hydrogen generator.

Please be warned, this is NOT a pure hydrogen generator. It makes a mixed gas, Oxygen (O2) and Hydrogen (H2).
It is in the perfect ratio to be explosive. Use extreme caution if you make this device.
A better choice it to do some research and find an electrolysis device which captures the oxygen and hydrogen in separate containers. These are just as easy to make and are safer by design.
FYI
Uh, yeah. Thanks, but this is just a 6th grade science project.
No elaboration on how I can turn this into a larger scale energy source for any kind of real world application…?!
Surprise! Same conclusion we had in 6th grade – returns less energy than it takes…
Really guys?
Wished I saw a video to make it even easier.ty
When you want to teach something to someone use the standard process, 1) Tell them what you are going ton teach. (Show a photo of the finished product first) then 2) Teach them Explain in general terms what they are to do and 3) Tell them what you just taught them.
A lot of pretty but useless illustrations provided here but a poor presentation of how to do it.
Exactly what I thought when at the last he said something about a syringe??? Syringe?? Those are illegal to have unless you are a junky (STILL ILLEGAL) or work in a hospital and can only access them WHEN you’re IN the hospital – DUH!!!!! PLUS SYRINGE WAS NEVER ON THE LIST TO TOOLS!!!!! It simply said needle. Well guess what, there are TONS OF DIFFERENT NEEDLES IN THIS WORLD, SOLID ONES, HOLLOW ONES AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE!!!! ANOTHER, DUH!!!!!!!!!!
And a SURE AS HELL AM NOT GOING TO GO LOOKING THROUGH THE GARBAGE AT A HOSPITAL FOR MEDICAL DRIPS AND SYRINGES!!!!
THIS ARTICLE NEEDS TO BE DELETED BEFORE YOU GET SOME KID ARRESTED OR SICK WITH SOMETHING HE GOT FROM USED DRIPS AND NEEDLES FROM A FUCKING HOSPITAL!!!!!!!
askaprepper.com needs to use some fucking COMMON SENSE BEFORE POSTING THIS SHIT!!!
WAKE UP – DUMB-ASSES!!!!!
Completely wrong about the syringe. I can go down to tractor supply and buy a hundred right now. I have them in my cabinets. I give my animals their vaccinations (not rabies), antibiotics, etc. So in short, someone gave you wrong information on the legality of possession of needles and syringes.
All you have to do is go to a FEED STORE, DUMBASS! You can buy hypodermic equipment and tubing for LIVESTOCK use! Do your fucking homework! Preppers, you ROCK!
They are NOT illegal and can be found at most pharmacies and farm supply stores !
I guess hydrogen you could use as a weapon or even a source of energy
Forgive my ignorance but why would one want or need to create hydrogen in an SHTF situation? It seems there are more useful things that need to be done during that time.
What exactly is a browns gas generator going to be useful for when shtf?
This is not for demonstrating over-unity…
hydrogen can be stored, search “hydrogen house project”. Use not required solar energy and generate hydrogen.
The issue with hydrogen, how do you consume it? Store it?
It needs to be compressed to put into a cylinder, it requires a special compressor because the molecule is smaller than anything else. Hence it requires triple diaphragm gas compressor.
I think it is a big scam that hydrogen gas is “dangerous”… a molecule which is already in a gas format is less flammable than a more condense liquid format…
Food for thought.
Emh
Are you sure about that? Take natural gas and freeze it to a liquid and from my understanding it isn’t volatile at all. Not does it evaporate. It could spill out on the road from a gas tank and with enough heat might start gasifying, then becomes flammable, but also would bleed off to atmosphere. There’s ships that transport liquefied natural gas across the ocean.
I’m fact one place is set up to feed Atlanta, Ga.
scam? does the word Hindinberg mean anything to you?
Long term bottle neck for hstf is food…
Not sure why there are not more fruit trees everywhere….
Emh
From my own personal experience, fruit trees require a lot more tending than non-fruit trees. It also takes several years for them to start producing fruit. We put in three apples trees two years ago. They were at least two years old when we got them. It will be another two years at best before we can expect any apples. Plus, we almost lost the trees last summer to Japanese beetles which might set them back even further. Most people don’t have the kind of patience it takes to care for fruit trees.
This project can NOT be used for stored energy! Period. This produces a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas, a explosive mixture. You might as well try to store energy with old, partially frozen, improperly nuetralized nitoglycerine…
There was a hydrogen generator on the internet about 8 years ago, it was designed to run a car, very complicated because it could vary the production rate instantly to cover driving at changing speeds, the unit in this project is a toy, but a slightly bigger version, that filled a barrel ( maybe 5 to 45 gallons ) would be ideal to supply a stationary gasoline motor that powers a water pump or generator, the only modification needed is to fit a valve before the carburettor to shut off gas flow when the motor is not running, ( the float and needle valve wont work with gas)
1. Once again this isn’t a hydrogen generator but a browns gas generator. A 55gallon drum of it WILL kill you.
2. A 55 gallon drum of hydrogen will NOT fuel a generator. Not unless the hydrogen is under high pressure.
Sorry Stan, but I have built, own and operate a similar device, it pumps into a old 200 lt ( maybe 55 gallons) disposable oil drum, when the pressure gets to 2.5 psi in the drum, the device cycles off, but will re-start when the pressure drops to 1.5 psi. The gas fuels a 5.0 Kva generator, that charges a large bank of 12 volt batteries, they run through an inverter that powers my home and out buildings.
One tip that nobody has given yet, place your motor above the fuel tank ( like gravity feed, but backwards).
Also a lot of people are worried about having hydrogen mixed with 50% oxygen, is it dangerous? IT SURE IS. But it isn’t as volatile as a gasoline to air mixture that is mixed at a ratio of 1 part gasoline to 15 parts of air (by weight) and that is what cars have been using for a 100 years or so.
When TSHF happens this can work for you to run generators and pumps, I use this system to avoid power bills, even though I have power connected, I don’t use THEIR power at all whatsoever.
I was in a position to see the time when the SHTF, I decided to leave my home of 65 years in CA and migrate to Auckland New Zealand, where life is good but expensive.
good stuff
I think I will spend time , energy, and money on something a little more useful. I bet it would be fun to do with the kids though.
I always thought you had to use sodium hydroxide (lye), water, and aluminum mixed together to make hydrogen.
I was going to make a hydrogen generator and connect it to my fuel system in my truck to see if it would work.
I might try it on my lawn mower first.
Hi SouthernNationalist, for the lawnmower, using the heat from the exhaust to heat a container of about 1 quart, fill it with aluminium foil then add as much lye water (caustic soda) as will fit, run a 3/8″ metal (copper) pipe to the air intake of the carburettor, start the mower on gasoline, when the caustic soda starts bubbling, turn off the gasoline. You will notice a lack of power, if you’re mowing thick grass, but for normal trimming there is no difference. A couple of things to remember, don’t use this on a 2 stroke mower, because the motor will seize up, and don’t touch the copper gas supply line, it will be extremely hot.
Personally I use solar power to separate the water which is used at my farm for cooking and heating. Cheap gas source but yes do your homework as the wrong setup can be fatal, literally.
All you need to do is separate the plus and minus plates. One plate will have the hydrogen the other plate will have the Oxygen. Have seen this done before with the large propane tanks as the storage container for the hydrogen gas. Used it as a low-pressure tank. Feed a generator and use it for cooking gas.
As the resultant gas is explosive, this could be used for such purposes. Blowing stumps.
Defensive situations.
And more.
But be careful
HAHAHAHAHAHA Love The Comments, Arguments, Disagreements, Hysterics LMAO can’t please everyone. I applaud you for making this. I look at the silver linning, but how many times did you cut your finger lol. the hysterical comment from AKMguy had me rolling on the floor. he does have a good point. I build mine different using stainless steel washers. have stainless steel plates. anyway love that this this is alive and well. i Like, OLE!
