When the grid goes down you will find that there are a plethora of items that we take for granted in our everyday lives but that you will suddenly find renewed value in.
While stockpiling the items we’re about to cover may not seem as ‘exciting’ or as important as stockpiling necessities such as food and water, they will be badly missed in a future SHTF scenario.
That’s why you need to start stockpiling these items now, because when disaster strikes, having plenty of these items on hand will help make your survival efforts significantly easier and more comfortable.
What are these items that you need to start stockpiling? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.
Here are common items that will become luxuries when SHTF:
Batteries
Most people have a drawer or a cabinet in their home stockpiled with several kinds of batteries. If you are one of these people, consider adding more batteries to your collection.
Make a list of all battery-powered items you’ll use in a future disaster scenario (such as flashlights, GPS devices, and so on), and plan on stockpiling at least a year’s worth of batteries for each one.
Propane
You can use propane to fuel your lanterns, gas grills, and camping stoves. Propane will become in very short supply following a grid-down disaster so you’ll want to make sure you stockpile as much of it as you can.
The lightweight and portable propane canisters are relatively inexpensive to purchase and easy to stockpile.
Candles
If the lights ever go out from a power grid down scenario you’ll start using candles a lot more than you’re used to.
In addition to stockpiling candles, learn how to make them and stockpile the necessary ‘ingredients’ as well.

Vehicle Fuels
Gasoline and diesel will become two of the most valuable commodities in a post-grid down world, especially since the pumps at fuel stations will no longer be working.
Be sure to stockpile as much gasoline and diesel as you can, but be extremely cautious about how you go about storing it.
Coffee
Who doesn’t like their morning coffee?
If you’re a coffee person coffee will surely be something you’ll miss in a grid-down disaster scenario.
Besides coffee, be sure to set aside coffee-making materials such as coffee filters, a pot, and the ability to heat water.
Salt
Salt serves many more purposes beyond adding flavor to certain dishes. It can also be used to help preserve food and to clean open wounds.
This is why salt was so highly valued before the modern era in which we live. You can store large quantities of salt in plastic containers that you can stack over one another.
First Aid Items
Most people have a few first-aid items stashed away in a bathroom or kitchen cabinet, but it’s always wise to continually add more so you have a surplus. This includes adhesive tapes, antibiotic ointments, bandages, and gauze pads.
In a grid-down disaster, you may not have access to professional medical help.
Even the smallest cut or scrape can result in a serious infection. You can’t generally buy antibiotics over the counter, so here is how to stockpile antibiotics without a prescription.
Hygiene Items
This includes deodorant, feminine hygiene products, kitchen cleaning items, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, and toothpaste.
Ensuring proper hygiene and sanitation is one of the most overlooked and yet important aspects of disaster preparedness. Make sure you have a surplus of hygiene items just like with the first aid items we just discussed.
Matches
Matches (along with other fire-starting items) are truly something you can’t have enough of.
They will become badly needed following a grid-down disaster for lighting your candles, lighting fire to your indoor wooden stove to heat up your home, or getting campfires going outside to cook food and stay warm.
Razors and Shaving Cream
Assuming you don’t want to shave using a knife, you’re going to need to make sure you stockpile plenty of razors and shaving cream.
This is one luxury that you’ll be very happy you didn’t forget following a major grid down disaster.
Pet Food
Don’t forget about your furry four-legged animals.
While most dogs and cats can eat ‘people food’ safely, by stockpiling plenty of their normal pet food you’ll ensure that their nutritional requirements are being met. This is especially important if any of your pets are on a special diet.
Seeds
You’ll no longer be able to resupply yourself with food when the grocery stores become stripped of looters following the start of a disaster. The solution here is to grow your food.
You also won’t be able to get basic medicine, so you will have to rely on home made remedies from your own medicinal plants to treat your ailments. These are the plants doctors are begging people to grow and you should definitely have them in your backyard as well.
You can buy packets of seed for cheap, but they will pay dividends and become invaluable following a grid-down disaster when you start planting them in your garden outside.
Following a disaster, seed packets may even turn into a form of currency that people trade and barter with one another.
Sugar
Sugar may not be a necessity, but it is something that will be nice to have to help keep your morale up (assuming you like the flavor).
Sugar is also likely to become a precious commodity in a post-grid-down disaster world and will be a highly in-demand bartering item.
Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is a prime example of an item we use almost every day and yet don’t think about.
If you don’t have very much toilet paper stockpiled following a major disaster, you’ll be forced to turn to other means to do your business.
Assuming you don’t want to do that, you’ll want to make sure you stockpile as much toilet paper as you possibly can.
Keep in mind as well that each of the above items will become very highly in-demand on the bartering and trading market in the event of an economic collapse.
This is why it could be a wise idea to build two stockpiles: a larger stockpile for yourself and your family, and then a smaller stockpile for your trading with others.
Start including each of the above items in your disaster stockpile if you haven’t already. You’ll be very glad you did when the time comes.

Oh baloney we don’t have to live like some homeless Californian or somebody in Seattle or Portland who’s house got burned down by protesters.
In prepping we look at the worst and hope for the best.
We get into more of the Bidenomics and China Xi partnership before Trump gets re-elected. We may have civil unrest by the illegals protesting in the streets, on campuses and the ones that got away from Border Patrol by design. Weapons provided by the drug cartels and some of the Marxist bureaucrats we have in political venues.
We are getting close to the 2024 elections to determine where we go.
What will we do?
Life is so fun in America these daze, are you happy now, or missing Trump?
Biden the American Trojan Horse of destruction?
Whose country is it? Did America become a satellite country of China?
Demoncrat’s only clean up the homeless or any other disaster for their commie bosses. American taxpayers are no longer the American bosses of politicians in this nation.
American citizens had the table turned around, taxpayers are now the slaves to the elite in charge, State, Federal and the Washington DC Deep State Swamp run by China, Soros and the various Marxist groups scattered around America – Tyranny has come to the surface of our delusional dream.
What is the difference between the RED Guard and the Antifa, BLM, University Brown Shirts in America? We see the rise of indoctrinated students hate America and Jews.
The American law and order legal court system is going away of the Chinese Corrupt Propaganda – CCP.
In San Diego City that Demoncrat city council has approved Smart Cameras for the police to surveil the city residences activities.
A coincidence with Biden and Xi in San Fransicko meeting this week, What is going on?
Chinese leader Xi and the Asian Demoncrat bosses of Biden and CA gov Gavin Newsom demand in San Fransicko that the homeless encampments and poop sidewalks, street be cleaned. Cleared of human wasted druggies, mentally ill, sexual trade, be gone low life.
Who runs the American government? It ain’t Biden or Harris, maybe the Obama’s seeking a 2024 presidential term of Michelle?
Why did the CA freeway 10 burn up from the drugged out homeless?
Why is George Soros and son funding the destruction of America?
don’t care about who wins
We all need to support the Article 5 Convention of States. We CAN wrest power from the feral government!
So prep like there will be no restock of anything for a long long time? Done. seeds saved for multiple years ahead. Done. Batteries, many rechargeable. Battery chargers both 12v and solar powered. Done. Clothing and cloth and thread for years ahead. Will out last me! Shoes and boots. Have some and can make moccasins in several styles. Also yarn- “tons”, well a lot anyway. Also knitting needles and crochet hooks in a wide variety of sizes. About done restoring a lovely treadle sewing machine and have a very heavy-duty leather sewing machine. I don’t reload amo but I used to have a wall of trophies for archery and in a pinch, I can make a good working bow and know how to straighten handmade arrows. ok. What else? I can start a fire and have experience cooking several different ways with fire. I can temporarily shelter or make something a bit more permanent. I can sharpen my knife on granite but really do prefer a whetstone. I have my old spotting scope, to go bags packed, and full surgical med kit with suturing or taping capabilities. I’ve owned animals for years and doctored them, set my own broken arm, and delivered my last baby at home without a doctor. I know the basics…. I can piece a quilt or make a tied or woven cover from old clothing, and I’ve made a long coat that was popular with young folks from used denim and heavy cloth. It’s both attractive and quite warm. I made cheap thong plastic sandal soles into thick soled shoes just to prove to myself I could do it. I have multiple sizes of new ones stored away. Probably one day my kids will look at all my stuff amazed at the crazy ladies hording. they will ask themselves, What was she thinking?
I usually think, better safe than sorry. I’ve lived without what others call necessities. Key word…. LIVED. yup. I’ve survived what could have killed me. Yet I always felt like I had an abundant life. I could always set an extra place at the table if someone came by.
My chickens are reacting like chickens to colder nights, Between that and some in molt the egg production is off. But the excess roosters from spring chicks will soon be making scheduled appearances on the dinner table. Rabbits do what rabbits do so very well. That provides warm fur and fresh white meat for many meals. This year I moved them to a new home but with the coming of spring they will all be eating from Permanant tiny pastures planted just for them so they can in turn supply my need for meat and eggs.
The newly planted garden, berry patches, and fruit trees will be soon supplying fruits and vegetables in quantities I hope will be abundant. New planting of bulbs, many of which are also edibles, will be beautiful in the spring. I’m even seeding and transplanting wild edibles onto the new place.
I did splurge on larger fruit trees to set out and they are beautiful. Some should bloom and bear at least a small crop in the coming year. I’m too old to plant truly young trees and wait on them. The berries, of many varieties, already have born a small amount of Fall fruit. There should be more in the Spring. My chosen companion here is a hard worker. I’ve helped a bit with some of his projects and he’s helped install drip irrigation to most of my plantings. Irrigation can be run from a well here or by gravity from multiple large water containers I brought with me. I’ll be setting up my solar power here as back up. It was my main power at my old home.
I’m also setting up a painting studio so I can get back to my creative arts. It’s been a hard but fun year getting settled into a new place. I can apply much of what I’ve been doing and have room to do more. I’m also helping to find a place to start a new church here. That’s exciting for me. He’s a Ham operator in a club and maintains a repeater for them. I’m a novice studying to get my license.
Actually, what many are calling Prepping is either survival planning, finding a cheaper way to live, or simply old-fashioned ingenuity. For me it’s mostly the latter two. i grew up growing, foraging, and gleaning so we could can and dry enough to last until whenever the next harvest would be. It still seems like a good way to live.
Hi Grandma
That’s already rigged with the GOP permission and again, maybe their assistance.
As we saw with the Jordan removal for House control, most of the GOP doesn’t want someone in there to right the wrongs. The new guy, Mike, is no different than McCarthy who did NOTHING for us – and that’s how he got voted in.
America is over and people aren’t going to believe how ugly and violent our country WILL become towards white patriots, soon, thanks to NWO president Obama with lackey Biden at the podium to deflect the heat away from him.
crazyoldlady,
Thank you for sharing. You are what I strive to become.
we all believe we can make a difference, change the world ,save the planet and that is why we still hope, try, do something we think is going to work .
well not so
there is a way that seems right , acceptable, ok and right in the eyes of the beholder
only that is never the case
pipe dreams , silver lining happy thoughts , can never , ever change the final outcome of where mankind will take him or herself to .
when anyone chooses evil, and becomes thier own selfish god of self , happy , me ism
this is what will end .
The bible is real clear about the final outcome of mankind, where we came from , who we really are inside , and the real man or woman of the heart
Desparately wicked , who can know it .
for the ways of man are to satisfy thier self, lust, passion, own desires
but when you accept jesus christ into your heart as a new life , believe and , trust in the truth john 14: all chapter , confess your sin and repent , change direction , put down falsehoods, and worldly passions, lust , corruption s , you do not see as the world sees
your views change and you do not accept the lies of the evil one who controls people with money , lust, passion , desire
Jesus said he opens the door , and if anyone accepts him, believes in him and follows him , he or she will have eternal life . NO other way , no liars, thieves, criminals shall enter into the kingdom unless thru repentance, thru jesus christ a changed life , a new creation , a new way of life .
Because God is Holy , Just , Loving he cannot change for anyone , no matter what
so much deception , so many fake, false gods, fake false decievers
Bottom Line , store up you treasure in heaven where thieves in your gov. cannot steal , take, tax, lie to cheet you out of .
NO man can ever become as God, Be like God, and Be God that is the lie of satan
Can we Americans still hide in plain site from the corrupt bureaucrats overlords?
In today’s smartphone era, police smart camera lights in cities, ring doorbell and home camera security systems, could the A-Team still hide in plain sight?
Are there still techniques private citizens can use that are unclassified versions of what world class spy’s use?
The Chinese Social Credit System is coming soon to a city next to you. All bow down to your new savior as Biden hands over the United States to China. Will San Fransicko be the new Western Chinese presidential Headquarters?
Biden and CA gov Newsom cleaned up the homeless stinky poop streets for their Asian Boss.
I love this guy or girl, Christopher a true religious troll that get the preppers upset by his foolish nonsensical sentencing of gobbledygook.
Ha, Ha, go a be fruitful my sun.
Wondering why you received “thumbs down” votes? There’s truth in your post. Thank you. I feel the same way…
WE can’t save the planet. Only Jesus will save us. He’s returning real soon and I personally can’t wait for His arrival!.
Pat my prepper back. Got them all.
Razors will last a year – if you dry the blade.
Or, if you only shave once a month.
Things that keep missing lists like this is gardening and hand tools. Having seeds is great, but what will you do with them if you can’t tend a garden? Hoes, rakes, and shovels should be stored in multiples. Saws, hammers, and other tools, even if you can’t use them yourself, can be valuable bartering items.
Basic repair kits should probably be considered. Tire patches, sewing kits, duct tape, rope, can all come in handy, and depending on how long SHTF lasts, these items may become some of your daily staples.
Good list! Multiple hoes, not only a straight hoe and a furrowing hoe, but include a heavy Italian style Grape Hoe, it is easier to break ground with. Be sure the grape hoe has a round(ish) eye so you can replace the handle easier if it gets broken. Ensure that you have a can of boiled linseed oil to maintain the wooden handles with as well, new tool varnish finish raises blisters.
prepper in training… done
I guess each person develops a list of what is important to them and of coarse what we run short of is pure speculation and will depend on circumstances and the conditions that develop. That said, I would share my priorities. Breathable air (so maybe some filtration, either a gas mask or filtration for a whole room. Protection from the elements and staying warm (good coat and blanket and a place to shelter. Water, some bottled and ready to go, then a long term source and a way to filter and purify it. Food ( I keep a three day bag and what I hope will be enough for a balanced diet thru one winter). Fire, matches & lighters and multiple stove arrangements. First aid, SHTF implies bad conditions and injuries so stock what matches your level of being able to respond to. Then the rest of this list is probably ok to think about but only time will tell.
There is no one size prepping plan fits all!
We prep for what is going on or interpret what we think will happen in our local regions.
The one monkey wrench would be bug in or bug out to a completely unknown area. For example our house got ransack beyond repair or the house burned down. The burned down house might be from a looter or we forgot a candle toppled over an started a fire.
I have cached 5 gallon containers with clean sand, gravel, and activated charcoal are the main water filters I’d count on if bugging out. Same at home plus commercial ones as well. Also purification tablets and filtering devices made for camping.
Articles like this come out every once in a while and for me they are useless. The only place I can afford to live in is a 400 sqft studio apartment. There is no room for me to store these Items. Maybe for someone who has a garage or a basement or somewhere else to store these bulky items it would be good but most of us don’t.
Hi Stephen!
I fully appreciate your circumstance as I too am a small apartment dweller. Nonetheless, I find this site and these periodic articles very interesting and useful. Some considerations for you to think about.
I purchased a set of four “lifters” for my bed frame. They are available at Walmart and the like. They seem to come in two sizes and I bought the larger 8″ lift. I use flat boxes from Costco that slide easily over the floor and under the bed. I do have a queen sized and have finally gotten used to getting in and out of a bed that is “way off” the floor but am still amazed at the amount of food and other items that I can store there. And with a deep bed skirt, nobody can see the storage!
Also, I am a retired architect and every closet I have ever built or observed usually has interior side spaces within the closet that extend beyond the wall opening of the closet itself. In these I built some very simple and inexpensive shelving from the floor to top of the closet space. (My landlord doesn’t yet know about these!) In here I can store six, five-gallon water bottles on each side or other necessary items. I have given up some hanger rod width but acquired more useful storage! I don’t have a lot of clothes anyway.
I have a six-drawer dresser. Yup, you guessed it! The bottom drawer is for my rather limited personal hygiene, first aid and batteries storage. My kitchen cabinets both floor and wall units are fully utilized as well with stacked items.
I mean no disrespect to you and not withstanding a potential eviction, I am pretty sure we can probably manage a three month catastrophe possibly four if I monitor our (me and my significant other) intake. Do take stock of what is available to you. You may surprise yourself with your own ingenuity. Best wishes and again many blessings to all those who contribute to this site.
Articles like this are good – for me – I learn things.
I figure – Most Anyway – In here, are smarter than me.
But I have been at this for say 10yr now.
I guess you could call me/us a “Prepper”/”Survivalist”.
So – For Me, For many yrs now.:
Food for 6mo minimum. Cook Stoves, Lights, Heat, etc.
No garden but have Heirloom Seeds for vegies etc. for yard out back.
Water for 3 mo. + Neighbor Pool across the street. And Roof Collectors.
Ammo for – as long as it takes. In the Thousands/gun. 12 guns.
Monthly Combat – Competition Shooter – Pistol/Rifle/PCC. For 10yr now. High Speed Combat Shooting.
State and DHS Certified Instr, Sniper/SWAT instr. But Not LEO. Not xMil.
But been Shot-At – Few times.
Sniper Camo – Everything. Including Room Vails, Face Smudge set.
Full Body armor – Class 3 (Pistol) & Class 4 (Rifle). Helmet, +.
Home – Woods and 4 large Sheds(full) out back in heavy woods.
Local wildlife – Squirrel, Rabbit, Turkeys, Deer, Bear, more.
“I” stay in below-ground basement apt – Cannot shoot Me from outside.
Gasoline – 50gal. In 10 cans out back.
“I” drive my “Survival Van” – Keep it Loaded. I could survive for a month just out of it.
Medical ? : Wife : Vietnam Vet – Nurse. Steel Nerves. Seen and done a Lot.
I tell her – “I” will do the Shooting. “YOU” just patch me up. ?
Biggest threat to us – Being “Burned Out”.
Just “Looking” – “around here”, you would not think we were
this ready. and NO – Showing or telling neighbors etc.
They have no clue.
All outside preps under back deck – neighbors cannot see.
Gas Cans, etc.
Caution on Neighbors :
Don’t Tell your preps.
Especially with kids.
Asking turns to Begging, Begging turns to Taking.
Anything I miss/need/need to change ?
DEFENDER, tell your wife we thank her for her service and from one vet to another, welcome home.
Look up socal prepper. She’s done it in 120sq ft
Stephen, do you have access to an attic in the building? There are some things that could be put back that won’t be affected by the heat. Do you have a friend that you trust? Do they have a place for your supplies? Can you buddy up to share the cost of a storage unit? I’m sure there may be other solutions to your problem if you can think outside the box.
I think of these lists as the “thrive, not just survive” list. I’ve mentioned before about aulti-day outage I experienced where I made a list of the good, the bad, and the serendipitous once power was restored.
What I found was that I had most ofy basic survival items and knew how to use most. A few I realized I didn’t know how to use and set about remediating that situation.
A lot of items in on the serendipitous column were things that provided lots of comfort, e.g., water on the hot water tank staying hot until the third day. On the third day, it was tepid, but not ice cold. Much nicer washing hands in hot, warm, or tepid water than ice cold water.
Having one solar light meant I didn’t have to worry about batteries dying. I had made a habit of keeping it near a window so it was charged up and ready to use. I could carry it easily, and it saved on my having to use candles or batteries.
Another thing I wanted to improve upon was to increase my backups. For instance, I like a certain tooth product. If that weren’t available, I have other things on hand that will meet the need. And having items that have multiple uses makes that item a higher desired item than one that’s a one-trick pony. Whole I might like the flavor of a particular tooth product. I know using baking soda will do the job and more besides.
I also have 1 Solar Light. I keep it on the dash of my van. So it can be charging most of the time and useful if I need it. With a small pair Binos. Big Binos in Back. My “Survival Van”. Food, Water, Toilet Paper, Ammo, Gun or 2, enough for 2 wks away from store or home. Other Van Items – Minimum Standard – Tow Rope, Batt Charger & Cables, Tool Box, Food, Water, 2 Cheap Guns(1 Glock 19) -Figure If I lose it – have not lost much :)(I am a S&W Guy), Ammo, Hvy Mil Blanket. Guns – I am Weekly Combat Competition Shooter so usually have many guns with me. Pistol, Rifle, PCC, etc. At “Home” – A complete Stock: Food, Heat, H2O(55gal Drum +) for say 3-4 mo. Ammo – Several Thousand Rds of ea. I also have full set Mil-Spec Class IV(Rifle Rated) Body Armor including Helmet. I could walk out of the house looking like 3rd Inf Div.:) Keep all that in my “Go to War” Chests. Try to come in here and you will prob need help – and the right kind – Mil Grade. Again – Wife was Vietnam Nurse – So Medical covered. Anything I miss/need ?
As I read all the comments I start listing all my “preps” .
Since 1979 I’ve been a “Survivalist” after reading “Lucifers Hammer”. I own 5 acres which I’ve planted over 70 fruits and other plants like my 14 Blueberry bushes which are over 6 ft tall and produce too much fruit ever year.
I was a Sargeant in the United States Marines Corp. for 6 years. A “certified” master mechanic for 4 decades, a professional welder for 10 years. Some overlapping jobs here. Went to night school to learn electrical engineering. Learned to cast metal and have a complete foundry. Have over $100,000.00 in tools, maybe more now. All this training to prepare me for a total collapse of society. I have over 10,000 books, most technical manuals, and gardening, and how to do everything under the sun kind of knowledge, and 4 complete sets of “Encyclopedia Brittanica” . The newest one is dated 2008. I’ve bought 14 Panasonic “ToughBook” (CF-30 and CF-31) laptops and have upgraded them all to 1 terabyte hard drives with hundreds of survival books installed on them.
My food storage includes 55 gallons of sugar, 55 gallons of salt, 40 gallons of honey, cases of freeze dried food enough for a family to last a decade. Complete tools and equipment to “can” and cases (20) of spare glass bottles with reusable rings. I have a grain grinder which can be used by hand or motor. The good one made in Montana. I own a military M35, a 1984 1ton Chevy dually, a 1 ton 2019 Chevy crewcab dually, a Honda rancher quad runner and a Honda side by side. Too many weapons (guns and knives) to list, and 20,000 rounds for each gun. Enough military gear to outfit two platoons. Tents, web gear, sleeping bags, Alice packs two way radios.
I haven’t even mentioned a quarter of the stuff I’ve squirreled away.
The problem is I only had one son and he wants NOTHING to do with any of this. Tells me it will be hard to sell off all this stuff I bought. Probably will just haul it away and scrap it all. So here I am at the end of my life looking at all this “stuff” and realize it was for nothing.
GW, I have the same problem. My daughter thinks I”m crazy. I am leaving her the house land and everything in and on it. There is one stipulation in the will: If she sells the place, she has to split the proceeds with her cousins. I am hoping that by that time she will have matured enough to appreciate what she has.
Lucifer’s Hammer is a great read! I told my husband your story as I have a reputation for reading doomer books. I told my husband “GW” got PTSD from reading Lucifer’s H! I wish we were as set as you. Maybe you could find a little church & spot a young family you like. Quietly put them in your will.
For those of us “aging out” on prepping— just keep prepping for the future. Someone will benefit from it, maybe a stranger to you that God chooses. Best to you.
I feel your pain.
And congratulate you on your preps.
AN IDEA/THOUGHT FOR YOU Look for a Gun Club near you, join it – there will be folks there who would LOVE
to get what you have when you pass-on. Will-it to them or the Club.
Look up IDPA on the web. “I” also call it “Combat Pistol”.
Look for a club near you that sponsors IDPA matches.
IDPA – INTL DEFENSIVE PISTOL ASSOC IDPA is like House Clearing like Sp Forces practice. Shoot and Move. Use “Cover”, etc.
Find the nearest Gun Club to you that Sponsors IDPA or Multi-gun/3Gun Competiton’s.
Meet people. There will be several there who think like you and me. Several younger Vets shoot in Most Matches.
“I” shoot IDPA, Multi-gun and Combat Rifle every month.
2 diff clubs. TN & GA. I AM 75 Y.O.
Pass your Preps to folks who will actually appreciate it.
And Remember and thank you for it.
Bonus 1 – Make new friends who think like you and me. Bonus 2 – Pass preps to friends who will actually appreciate it. Bonus 3 – Enjoy shooting. Maybe learn some things.
Lol, don’t “prep” out of fear for when you have to live a more self sufficient life just live one now
