When the Fed Coin was rushed to market it became clear that this would be the new currency. It became clear that our government needs us to move away from the old idea of the US dollar and into Fed Coin.
A great way to make that happen would be to bring on an economic collapse. That is exactly what we are witnessing in our country right now.
With the help of inflation, that even Janet Yellen said will last through 2023, we are going to face struggles with food, fuel, and labor in 2023.
The economic collapse will be severe, and I want you to be prepared for it. Do these 9 things before the 2023 economic collapse.
Establish Your Local Supply Chain
We have been working through struggling supply chains for the last 2 years. As the economic collapse approaches these issues are only going to get worse.
Related: Looming Grain Shortage. Do This Before It’s Too Late
Major corporations all over are cutting massive amounts of jobs in preparation for just this kind of event. They see the writing on the wall.
Rather than wait on the supply chain to recover, or not, it is time for you to establish your own local supply chain. Start with farmers and food.
Create A Collapse-Proof Wealth Matrix
Lately, I have been wondering if it will always be about diversification. In a disaster its nice to have cash, even though it’s frowned upon in many establishments these days. In a true economic collapse, I think that a variety of wealth is going to prepare you the most.
Your collapse proof wealth matrix should include things like cash, precious metals, bonds, and other transferable assets like land, or even gems and precious stones.
Barter items will be key in an economic collapse, too. Vices like coffee, tobacco, and alcohol will go a long way.
Bug In Preps
Think of all the things we have experienced in the last 2 years. From lockdowns, occupied portions of cities, to massive civil unrest.
I know a lot of preppers and I don’t know anyone that executed a true bugout. So, for most of us the economic collapse of 2023 is going to be another bug in situation.
Hopefully you have made improvements in your preps to be even better prepared for an extended bug in situation.
Your greatest concerns in this 2023 economic collapse are going to be access to things like food and fuel. You will also have to consider security if things get bad enough.
Know Thine Enemy
Where are the bad guys in your world? Do you know who is going to come out of the woodwork when things get bad? Now is the time to learn about the local gangs in your area. It is a time to watch the crime statistics and learn about the flow of things like drugs.
Conduct an area study to better understand all the influence in your neighborhood.
Economic desperation will create new community leaders. They might not all be good people. So, it will do you much better to learn about them now rather then when they show up on your front door with an offer or a threat.
On Grid/ Off Grid Balance
In Colorado, this year, thermostats were locked during the summer. Smart thermostats of course. They were locked because the government of Colorado had decided that due to the power constraints the people would only be able to cool down their houses as much as the state desired.
This is the future and one of the only ways you can avoid that future is if you start to develop an on grid/off grid balance.
In 2023 you should begin building off grid infrastructure to support you and your family when the lights go out or when the government decides you have used too much power.
⇒ 70+ Ingenious Projects To Help You Survive The Upcoming Economic Crisis
Things like outdoor kitchens, grey water sinks, smokers, solar showers, greenhouses, root cellars, and the like will all help you start to create that kind of balance we will all need to survive 2023.
Learn To Cook
The fact that we eat three times a day and most people do not know how to cook is just mind blowing to me.
Not only is it a wonderful thing to prepare the types of foods you want to eat when you want to eat them, but it is also so much more affordable then eating out.
There are whole cookbooks on depression era recipes that are designed to stretch limited amounts of protein, create stuffings to make meals more filling with less ingredients and much less cost.
If hard times are coming than you need at least one person in your home who knows how to cook using less expensive cuts of meat, offal, and how to stretch every meal.
Consider SHTF Careers
An economic collapse can bring on some serious job loss. What will you do if that job loss hits your home. How do you plan to survive fi you wind up out of work and there is no other work to be had? Or if that work does not make the ends meet in a world of hyperinflation?
Well, it would be nice to have an economic collapse proof or SHTF career lined up, right? So, what does something like that look like.
Given the fact that you are here at Ask a Prepper that means that you have valuable information on preparing for a collapse like this.

You can use that information and hopefully some skills to create your own SHTF career. Here are some valuable skills and SHTF careers that you could prepare for today.
- Teaching
- Medical Help
- General Repairs
- Hunting and Butchering
- Growing Food
- Seamstress
- Transportation of any kind
- Blacksmithing

Build A Neighborhood With Allies
This should be everyone’s goal in 2023.
We all could use more of each other.
It would help heal our nation but moreover it will give us the ability to help each other in tough times.
Everyone has skills that you may need.
Also, if you are dealing with bad guys, then having lots of people will make things much easier for you. Quantity has a quality all its own. You do not need a bus load of spec ops soldiers on your block.
Related: Are You A Bad Neighbor?
Start building your neighborhood back by having events, gatherings, and even starting a small community garden. This will engage people and before long it will make other connections.
2020 set us all back and forced us all into a little more isolation but its time to get back to being communal again. The very worst thing you can endure in an economic collapse is serious isolation.
Learn The Resources Of The Natural World
In the prepping world there is bushcrafting and there is foraging. These take you closer to the natural world and allow you to practice some survival skills along the way. However, in an economic collapse you are going to need an even more intimate understanding of the natural world.
You see, man made resources are going to be limited. Right now, we get most of what we need from a company. In an economic collapse it will be the natural world that suddenly has a lot of resources for those who can recognize them.
Now, is the time to develop a strong relationship with the trees, plants, animals, fish, and all they can offer you from medicine to building materials.
The year 2023 will be one that we never forget. In fact, it is starting to look like we are now in one of those historic decades. From 2020 to 2030 could be some of the wildest times we have ever seen on the planet.
At the very least you should try to accomplish these things before the full onset of the economic collapse of 2023.

If I get killed in a battle, I’m not sure I want the last thing I do on this earth to be murdering an attacker and not having the opportunity to ask for forgiveness from the Lord. I never considered that until a discipleship class I took through my church. Not sure how things will go down if I’m ever in this situation.
Murder and self-defense are not the same. Sorry to hear your church has added New Age Pacifism to your Bible studies. It’s quite common, actually. Quite a few other New Age concepts have been thoughtfully added by churches worldwide.
If you are not sure you are mentally willing to defend against, up to and including killing attackers, then you will be a victim. Prepare yourself mentally now to make decisions like this if the situation occurs because you won’t have time if you wait until confronted, and hesitation will often get you (or others you care about) hurt or killed.
Yeah I believe a lot of what you posted is true I’ve been prepping for years expecting the worse ,but hoping things don’t get that bad
Resourcing off the natural world–here’s a lesson from the Great Depression: the land was so over hunted by people from all “former” walks of live that deer, rabbits and even squirrels were almost hunted to extinction. The only animal to be had in quantity were humans themselves. Don’t expect to subsistence hunt or forage if there is an economic collapse–you might end up on someone else’s table (remember, history does not repeat, but it does rhyme)
I am part of a local farmers’ market and one thing we have seen is that there is nowhere near enough local vegetables being sold to feed most of the people here in this area and I live in a rural area! If we have any land at all, even just a back yard, we all need to be growing more than just a couple of tomato plants. If you can raise your own livestock, so much the better!
In this area of Arizona there used to be roadside stands at every farm. Most of the farms are gone, and the stands. One opens now and then 25 miles south of me, and each weekend one opens up in Tucson, 50 miles south. There are others here and there but they’re expensive. It’s cheaper to buy already canned or off trucks from Mexico, if you can find one. But, ’tis spring and the garden is greening. Happy New Year. niio
The late great comedian George Carlin talked so much about this country, warning everyone, telling like it is, very funny guy, love him. But, nobody does anything, after all what can you do? Run for office? Anyhow, I VERY much dislike fear mongering, I will keep a memo of this article here on my desktop and if by end of 2023 nothing much has changed I will discontinue my subscription with askaprepper. (if true than askaprepper is gold, but I’m sure I won’t have internet then) I do have eyes and can see for myself, I do not need an ulcer, and I HATE being manipulated. askaprepper always has good info otherwise.
Great site to learn. there’s a lot of very good things and good posts here. niio
Frye, do you have insurance on your home or vehicle? If after a yer you don;t use it will you then decide to cancel?
It’s better to be prepared and not need it, than need it and discover you are not prepared.
The so called “Elites” Have all but killed the animals and now they are going to keep the skies cloudy so no one will be able to grow anything!! It has been happening here is parts of SD for about 3 years now and even your seeds, I buy organic…they do not grow very much anymore! Where I live 5-6 days a week we are sprayed!! I kid you not!! Some are narrow chem-trails and some are wide and spread out wide.some are white and now some are a yellowish orange in color!! My front door in places was caked with layers of this!!
I’m a big believer in having lots of .22 lr ammo on hand. I believe it will be a lot more precious than gold or silver. It has taken down just about every species of animal on the planet, including two legged species. No recoil, accurate, very quiet, extremely quiet when suppressed, and just about anybody can easily tote several thousands of rounds of it in a backpack.
When the dollar collapses, one could trade little 50 round boxes for groceries, dental and surgical work, small food animals, work bartering, shelter, supplies, you name it, not to mention take down food Elk sized and smaller with well placed shots. If things really went south and all utter chaos were to form really bad people groups who’s intent were to make their living by looting, pillaging, theft and killing, a suppressed .22 could at the very least demoralized the daylights out of those kind of vermin at distances over three football fields away. A lot of folks in the trauma rooms have said that a lot of their worst off patients with bullet wounds are the ones who’ve been shot by .22 rounds. The bullet has the energy to enter the body, but tends to fumble and bounce around once inside, causing massive multiple wound channels, unlike many other calibers that just enter and exit. Many people have survived being headshot from various ammo calibers, but very few have survived getting shot in the skull by a .22 round. It has the energy to penetrate the skull, but doesn’t have enough energy to exit which causes it to ricochet and tumble, literally shredding the brain. Pardon the graphic imagery.
Ah yes the myth of tumbling 22lr and killing everything.
Yet anyone who shoots A Coon knows even a head shot isn’t going kill it in one shot.
You sound pretty ignorant to me. I know a few trappers where I’m from and a .22 pistol headshot easily does the job on a coons skull. A pistol in which the powder isn’t even thoroughly burned, thus travelling slower and with less energy than when fired out of a rifle.
YAH WAY – you are entitled to your opinion. But .22 ammo is more than ample for one shot dispatch of raccoons – either treed or trapped. Been doing it for years….. please stop spreading opinions as facts. People who come here to learn deserve to know the difference.
Had a rabid coon that took 3 head shots to euthanize. I know what your saying. Also saw a 14 year old die in the ER who was accidentally shot in the head while frog hunting. Either way, I don’t want to get shot {again} by a pellet rifle.
Complete bs. 99% of the coons I’ve “headshot” were dead before they hit the ground. If you wanted one to put up a little fight to fire up a young hound you had to shoot them in the rearend.
Just some extra data points to consider, not a criticism…
When game come under heavy hunting pressure, they will either go nocturnal, or relocate to the most isolated areas without humans, or both. A deer in your yard that you could technically take with a .22 now (though not legally), may only later present you with a 400 yard shot in poor or no lighting with lots of bullet-deflecting debris in the way.
A .22 is still lethal at 400 yards against a man, IF they will stick around, stationary, out in the open, while the misses plop around or whoosh past them while you adjust your aim. A group of marauders approaching from a long distance may still be challenging to hit with a silent (on their end) .22. They will be moving and likely spaced out from each other, to avoid making a larger bunched target, or for no other reason than they don’t have to smell each other’s stink. Once they realize they are taking rounds, your target acquisition will become much more challenging. Otherwise, a cartridge that can penetrate some cover and has reduced wind deflection over distance may be more valuable.
Lol it’s a neat trick shot. Let see 400 yards lobbying in rounds is a terrific plan If you want to be killed. A man with a 500 dollar ar15 will shoot you with greater accuracy far more lethal.
That’s what I was explaining, in a roundabout manner. I was trying to provide a kind explanation, rather than just criticize.
The hold over for 400 yards is ridiculous.
17hmr is a much better small game round. It has nearly double the speed for the same price.
556 is a cheap round as well and far more practical.
I, too, am blown away by the number of people that do not know how to cook ? or sew! Cooking! What could be easier?! I told my son ( who can cook ) , If you can read, you can cook because the directions on on the box/bag/can. Little did I realize there are people walking around that are incapable of following directions SMH. Sewing? It’s a needle and thread. Rudimentary tools! What do you do if you loose a button or have a small tear? Throw it away and buy another? THAT’S called more money than brains!
You only need to eat once a day.
Good well written article
I have 4 children 2 boys 2 girls and they are all excellent cooks they were raised very poor but I taught them how to make and how to make do on very little.
Good article and we already had warning shots from all over. Right now, got to cough up the cash for a new pressure canner and get all the lard and tallow canned. A case of eggs to put in lime water. New solar dryer. All meat roasted, boned, and dried. Both wringer washer fixed. Finish planting the spring garden (this is Zone 9-A). Start chilis and tomatoes. And so much more, LOL. By the end of April, collapse and sleep 24 hours. Happy New Year all y’all! niio
Really, are you all so goddam stupid that you believe and react to this sort of bullshit scaremongering article. This is nothing but clickbait to sell more ads, grow a brain people…oh sorry, I forgot you’re all redneck republican morons.
Suck start a 44
And your just a trolling jerk. If you think it’s stupid, do as most stupids do – shut the f*** up.
That’s the dumbest statement ever, make sure you wear your ” I HATE TRUMP” shirt when you are asking for help in a “redneck” area. You will get it, but your blue state allies will slam the door in your face!
Trump won’t be able to win again. He lost me with his anti gun bullshit. His make a deal sucks
Yo, David, you are apparently just a useful idiot. Take your leftist bullsit elsewhere.
If the economy doesn’t collapse and the country and the world are at peace in January of 2024, we “redneck Republican (sic) morons” will be okay, still “clinging to our guns and Bibles” and rocking on the front porch. If it all goes to Hell in a hand basket by January of 2024, we “redneck Republican (sic) morons” will still be fine, clinging to our loaded guns and our well worn Bibles or whatever other books we enjoy (the Foxfire volumes are pretty informative) and rocking in front of the wood stove, staying warm and dry, while you, David the Liberal troll with terminal TDS, will be wandering out in the cold and dark, looking for shelter and food and finding that your friends of the same ilk are equally ill-prepared for what came down the highway while you were fiddling like the grasshopper in Aesop’s fable. But that”s okay. Stay optimistic and clueless. We don’t mind.
Rednecks will not be fine. They don’t prepare nor store food.
David, are you one of those Libtard Idiots professing to “follow the science” and then claim climate change is created by modern man even though it has been occurring for millions of years? That cheap cloth masks will somehow prevent transmittion or intake of viruses? That being injected with experimental mRNA concoctions will prevent being infected by SAARS (Covid-19 and variants) viruses? That you can “select” your gender however you like in total disregard of DNA and Chromosomes?
In your Libtard dreams maybe, but not in the real world.
I grew up with a single mom who was a professional singer. I would come home be handed my baby sister and my younger sister would come home. I had to learn at a very early age how to do it all myself in self defense. When l got married I married a man with 2 kids. I thought very hard what I thought what the best thing I could do for my children. I finally figured we needed to teach them all to be the most independent adults they could be. We taught all our children cooking, sewing, fishing, hunting, changing oil checking all fluids in vehicles and how to change a tire. With our older kids we didn’t own our own house so they missed out on a lot of it but their younger sister did get to learn gardening, animal husbandry etc! We feel we have raised self sufficient children!! We’ve been preparing ourselves for our whole married life. Not totally independent but have solar next is well water and rainwater collection. One of the things we really have to work on is becoming financially stable we’re trying to sell our old house and then we will be debt free. We just have to fix what renters have demolished. We have been collecting jewelry, alcohol and my husband owns an HV/AC business! We’re ready to barter and last year put part of our orchid in we’ll be working more on irrigation and our garden! People teach your children to be independent please!!
Good advice to have precious metals.
This won’t be a popular thing to say here but I’ll say it anyway because the truth always needs to be told.
The prepper’s reason to not have precious metals is (all together now): “You can’t eat gold!”
That’s true. So why have it?
1- Barter. If there’s any kind of economy at all, even a black market economy, then gold and silver will be the preferred medium of exchange.
One example of silver’s usefulness might be: when the SHTF, the stores immediately get picked clean. But trucks might occasionally still arrive with supplies. If whoever is in charge of distributing whatever’s available knows that you will pay with good silver, you might be able to be first in line, or even get some goods out the back door before they’re gone.
Another example might be: Farmer’s Markets might continue to operate. It could be that silver will become the preferred method of payment.
2- Payment to government or institutional entities. It would be nice to not be forced into homelessness. That means you’re going to have to continue to make mortgage payments and pay property taxes. You might be able to barter a roll of toilet paper for a can of beans but try showing up at a lender’s office, to make a mortgage payment, or the courthouse, to pay property taxes, with a case of toilet paper. It ain’t gonna happen. But a couple of ounces of gold or silver could mean that you’ll be able to remain in your home (or keep driving your car) when everyone in your neighborhood is being forced to move out.
I understand the “You can’t eat gold” concept and the “Brass and lead are the only precious metals I need” concept. Truly I do. I’m just asking you to expand your thinking to see beyond those concepts.
No one is forcing me out of my home. And in a SHTF situation no cop or deputy is going to bother trying. The banks are going to get fucked. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
Oh yes, another reason to have precious metals is that the Central Banks of the world are buying and stockpiling it as fast as they can. I don’t know about you but that tells me something. It tells me that the people who are in charge of entire national economies rising and falling see two things:
1- They see that the old economy is on its way out.
2- They see that the new economy will be metals-based.
I’m taking their word for it.
I think it depends where you live how bad the collapse will be. I don’t anticipate a depression era nation wide collapse, but instead I think we’re on an incremental many year journey of slowly declining standards – step by step we are dropping our quality of life.
Those most effected are likely to be the ones most at the edges of quality of life now – the homeless are already homeless, and the poor already poor. It’s the working class and lower middle classes that will feel this drop, they are the ones that will slide a level lower. The poor will feel a definite pinch, and may shift to homelessness, but they have experience and skills at living with very little, those who have always been able to go out and buy a My Little Pony for their kids are going to be screaming.
This is why parts of this article spoke to me. The know your neighbour stuff not just to find allies, but to find your enemies too. And it’s not just gangs, if you are in an area where gangs aren’t prevalent you could still be under the watchful eye of a neighbourhood Control Freak Agent (aka curtain twitcher), or where wealthy entitlement spills over into unexpected, unprecedented and brutal repercussions for anyone ‘not like us’. (This could include arbitrarily changing rules in strata / HOA etc to better suit whomever is in power, through to harnessing local authorities to enforce specific rules. Not all of this might be related to life needs, but a power grab while everyone is distracted.)
While now is the time to get to know your neighbours if you don’t already, now is also the time to learn to listen to your gut instinct and take time to get to the bottom of who those neighbours are.
David, just wait. Wait on the government to come by with some free food, a cell phone that works and has satellite access to your favorite movies and games stored in the cloud, plus transportation to a metropolitan area of your choice and voucher for a weeks stay at the Hyatt Regency. Those like the ones on this site who educate themselves and learn valuable skills and a survivalist mindset will be ready for a world that is not unicorn and rainbows with a government that exists only to help us all.
I am in agreement with this article but not with the listing of shtf event careers nor with even if you have a carreer that it can be used effectively.
Hunting and Butchering
Growing Food
Mechanical repair and building of parts etc
Blacksmithing
Woodwork
Medical Help
Leadership
Seamstress / Hide tanning
Yes these are good to have but bartering with poses problems.
If all goes to pot, to trade you have to have some kind of trust which unless your are sure of the people you can not risk approaching them.
What I am saying is without a prearranged place for trading that is secured by some trusted party there can be little trading and then the problem of trust of who your trading with. The problem comes down to people will change after a shft some for the worst.
For example you go to this secure place and trade some service for some food they grow. This service requries you to go to some place to say build/repair/medical aid something. Now you have two problems. First is how secure is that area you have to travel to and how well do you know those people? Second is will they renege on the bargin after you have finished. Then what can you do if they renege?
See you have many problems to overcome with trading. Less with trading item for item because the trade happens then and there.
“You do not need a bus load of spec ops soldiers on your block”
Sorry, just sayin’… I’d RATHER have a busload of SpecOps soldiers on my block than nimwit neighbors. I’ll cook for them all, too. Think chuck wagon.
COMSEUR, when I was stationed in the Philippines and MT Pinatubo erupted, it was not long before Marines were sent out on security patrols through the housing areas. Those Marines were issued 2 MRE’s and a few water bottles per day, but MRE’s suck, so when we ended up cooking our frozen perishable foods as it thawed, we handed it out to every Marine we could see and told them to send any patrolling other areas to our house to get some decent hot food. We were very well protected, and when the packs of monkeys started raiding housing, even breaking in through windows and doors, the Marines would shoot them. Monkeys tried to break into my house, I chased them away, but they always came back, until the Marines shot a couple and I ” spot painted” about 100 yards of the top rails of the perimeter fencing with their blood. The monkeys never came back, although monitor lizards did show up a couple days later and took the monkey carcasses back into the jungle.
Thanks for the interesting article. This is what I need. After all, I am writing an economics essay for my school project, so I collect information. Unfortunately, I don’t have writing skills. That’s why I turned to https://customwriting.com/ an online service where professional writers can help in writing academic papers of any complexity. Usually, I order several of these works and after a couple of days they send me a ready-made version by mail, which is very convenient.
Here we are 1 1/2 years after the posting of this article on January 02, 2023 and have not experience this “2023 Economic Collapse” – the sky is falling – not yet.
