Many things changed when the Soviet Union fell apart in the early 1990s, but at the time it felt like the most important one was that fears of nuclear war receded.
For 40 years we’d all lived with the threat of annihilation, and suddenly that threat was gone. Well, now it’s back.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin’s thinly-veiled threats to go nuclear if the West opposed it too openly, has refocused everyone’s minds on what would happen in a nuclear war.
Preppers are less likely to have forgotten the nuclear danger than most people, but even we are probably taking an urgent look at our plans for surviving a nuclear attack.
Obviously, the first and most important step in living through this nightmare scenario is not being under a weapon when it explodes. Unfortunately, unless you’re a senior officer in Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces you won’t have access to their targeting plans, so how can you know if you live near a target?

Any nation that launches a nuclear strike on the USA knows it’s going to take a beating in return, so its priority will be to destroy the USA’s ability to keep fighting.
That way, the enemy will have a chance to recover while America is too busy patching itself back together to keep hitting them. Knowing that, we can work out what the likely targets will be.
Strategic Forces
The first priority will be to destroy the USA’s ability to keep launching nuclear attacks.
For example, Minuteman missile silos and control centers will be attacked, to destroy any missiles that weren’t launched in the first salvo.
That gives us our first list of targets:
- Francis E Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming
- Minot AFB, Minot, North Dakota
- Malmstron AFB, Great Falls, Montana
The missile silos at these bases are dispersed over large areas – and, like the control bunkers, they’re hardened targets designed to survive a close nuclear blast.
To ensure the silos are destroyed these bases will be saturated with multiple ground bursts, creating a large downwind fallout hazard. The USA also has long-range bombers that can carry nuclear weapons.
Their bases will be attacked in an attempt to either destroy the bombers on the ground or take out the runways and support facilities they need to launch follow-on attacks.
There are five Strategic Command bomber bases, which will all be targeted:
Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, Louisiana- Minot AFB, Minot, North Dakota
- Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas
- Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, South Dakota
- Whiteman AFB, Knob Noster, Missouri
Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, LouisianaEach of these bases will most likely be hit with multiple warheads, a mix of airbursts to destroy buildings and ground bursts to take out command centers and weapon storage bunkers. There will be a significant downwind fallout hazard.
The final part of the US nuclear arsenal is the Trident submarine force. These operate out of two naval bases, one on each coast; those bases will definitely be attacked, to destroy any submarines that aren’t out on patrol and the infrastructure needed to load missiles into any that survive.

The bases will be hit with multiple weapons, a mix of air and ground bursts to destroy the base, and water bursts to sink any submarines that ran for deep water when the attack warning came in.
There will be a major fallout hazard downwind of these locations:
- Naval Submarine Base King’s Bay, St Marys, Georgia
- Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Washington
Naval Submarine Base King’s Bay, St Marys, GeorgiaBoth bases contain stockpiles of Trident D-5 missiles and nuclear warheads, making them high priority targets.
If you don’t live near any of these locations, don’t breathe a sigh of relief just yet.
There are only three Minuteman missile fields in the US, but nuclear-capable bombers and Trident submarines aren’t tied as firmly to their home bases.
If international tension is rising, bombers can be dispersed from their home bases to any base or airport with a long enough runway, scattered in ones and twos across the country.
A 2,000-foot runway is long enough for a B-1B Lancer to operate from. B-2 Spirit stealth bombers can fly from a 6,500-foot one.
The enemy’s priority will be the smaller number of 12,000-foot-plus runways that can accommodate a B-52H, but any large airbase or airport is a potential target. To save weapons these will mostly be targeted with one or two airbursts.
Naval bases will also be targeted; they can service, and possibly reload, Trident submarines that have fired their missiles and returned to the USA. Any port deep enough for aircraft carriers is likely to be hit; US carriers carry nuclear-capable strike aircraft, and the enemy will want to reduce our ability to keep them in operation.
Command And Control
The USA won’t be able to fight a war effectively if its chains of command are disrupted, so civilian and military command centers will be targeted. This is bad news if you’re in or around Washington, DC.
Here are the main command centers that will be hit:
- Presidential Emergency Operations Center, White House, Washington, DC
- The Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia
- Andrews Air Force Base, Morningside, Maryland
- HQ North American Air Defense, Cheyenne Mountain Complex, Colorado Springs, Colorado
- United States Central Command, McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida
- United States Southern Command, Doral, Florida
- United States Space Command, Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Andrews AFB is where the president will be evacuated from in an emergency, Marine One will fly him from the White House to Andrews, where he will board Air Force One.
An attacker would hit Andrews in the hope of killing the president and other senior members of the administration.
The other locations will be hit with ground bursts – in the case of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, multiple high-yield ground bursts – creating a significant fallout hazard downwind.
Power
Recovering from a nuclear attack will be hard. It would be even harder if the power was out over huge swathes of the country, so expect our power generation capacity to be heavily targeted.
Of course, not every power station will be hit – there are too many of them. An attacker will use their warheads where they’ll have the most impact.
That makes nuclear power stations the most likely targets. There are 93 of them in the USA and they’ll probably all have at least one weapon aimed at them. The weapons would probably be relatively clean airbursts, but there’s still a risk of fallout from the reactors themselves.
Some other large power stations could also be hit. For example the Hoover Dam can generate more electricity than most nuclear power stations, and also provides the water supply for a large part of the southwest: Its destruction would seriously affect the USA’s recovery.
Transport
Like power, transport infrastructure will be vital to recovering from a nuclear attack – so the attacker will destroy as much of it as possible.
Most major airports will be hit anyway, because they have runways that can launch strategic bombers, but that leaves plenty other targets.

Major freeway interchanges are likely to be hit. They will probably get a ground burst weapon, causing a large crater and disrupting the ground for an even larger area; this will seriously slow down repairs. The same goes for major railway stations and line junctions.
Other chokepoints will likely be hit, too. The attacker will want to cause as much delay and disruption, with as few weapons, as possible.
Bridges and tunnels that save long detours will be obvious targets. The San Francisco Bay bridge, the Verrazano Narrows bridge in New York, the Mackinac Bridge in northern Michigan, the George Washington Bridge linking New York and New Jersey – those are the sort of targets an attacker will want to bring down.
Again, they’re likely to be hit with ground bursts. An air burst will drop bridge spans; a ground burst will destroy the whole structure, including the foundations, and replace it with a radioactive crater that it’s almost impossible to build a new bridge over.
It will also throw up a huge plume of radioactive steam and fallout, contaminating the surroundings and downwind area.
When most people think of nuclear targets, they think of cities. That’s not really the case. Many cities will be hit, but not because they’re cities – the real targets will be docks, bridges, command centers or power stations. The city itself is collateral damage.
With the information in this article you can identify likely nuclear targets in your area, work out what they’re likely to be hit with and plan on how to get clear of them if international tension rises.

You might find the book, Nuclear War Survival Skills, by Cresson Kearny and interesting read. According to him, and he cites research in his book to back this up, even a full scale nuclear war between superpowers will not come close to destroying the world. Of course it is better if we never test the thesis, but the hand of God moves in mysterious ways.
If there is an all out thermonuclear war, it will result in a nuclear winter in which all light from the sun will be blocked by the nuclear dust throughout the atmosphere, This will put an immediate stop to all photosynthesis which is the source for the oxygen we need to survive. That would be the end of all oxygen breathing organisms,,,the end to planet Earth except for anaerobic bacteria unless they too are wiped out by radioactivity.

I spent some time in the ’50s in grade school practicing “duck and cover drills”; firmly convinced that the wooden school desk would protect me. I am not so sure about that now. In any event, it’s been a relatively few worry free intervening years.

With the testing in the Southwest and Pacific, Duck & Cover was nonsense for survival. The classified documents am sure told a different story of Survivability. I was a kid during the 50’s. I didn’t think one moment that the threat was over with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The threat only increased because MAD was no longer applicable and the 20,000+ nukes were still there (there was still China and the threat of nuclear terrorism ; ie Pakistan is a Muslim country) Now the club includes KIm. At least during the “cold” war there was the unstated agreement not to be the first to use nukes. That ship has sailed. Once the first nuke is used, then within the hour all the 20,000 will be used. As Quint sang in JAWS “Farewell & adieu to you Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain. For we’ve received orders to sail back to Boston, AND NEVER MORE WILL WE SEE YOU AGAIN.”
When we look at the map and see the discussion in articles like this, we often get a feeling of utter hopelessness. For those who survive the initial blast, that feeling is unfounded with a bit of preparation. If you are within the blast area there is little chance you will survive without extensive shielding. But for those outside the blast, the maps with red dots covering entire states are deceiving. There is plenty of area between them where people can survive blast radiation and the actual blast coverage is minimal. Today, 10 miles from Chernobyl, life goes on as normal. People are living today at Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
After the first volley, there is unlikely to be another, as the first targets will be the military installations that do the targeting—the singular exceptions being subs. Afterwards…
There are two main concerns for those outside the blast area: fallout and contamination. The fallout, carried by wind, that settles over a defined area contains gamma radiation with a half life of 14 days or less. Gamma waves are short and require skin contact or ingestion to damage cells. Therefore, if you find yourself in the fallout area, it is a simple matter of sealing off your dwelling with tape and plastic sheeting and weathering in place for two weeks—at the end of which the fallout dust will no longer be harmfully radioactive.
The next big concern in the longer term is contamination. Other forms of radioactive material produced by nuclear blasts, some with a half life of thousands of years must be avoided until decontamination ensues. That means we have to be vigilant about consumption, water, for example, as well as plants and animals. Books have been written on this, so, for those who survive the blast, all is not lost, especially for imaginative preppers and clever survivalists.
There will always be tragedy. There should always be hope.

I’ve read some pretty convincing articles on the survivability of humans after a nuclear blast. Outside of ground zero duck and cover is actually a pretty good way to survive the shock wave and flying debris.
Like seeing the Air Force Base being represented by an F86. The B1 is also an antique, almost completely out of service. They removed their nuclear capability 20 years ago and wore them out as ground attack aircraft in the Mid East. I’ve seen them practicing tactics on the range, few things as awesome as a B1 working with F16 wild weasels in a low level attack.
Russia and the U.S. each has around 5000 deployable nuclear warheads. MAD still exists, one missile sub can launch 240 extremely accurate warheads, we keep about 4 cruising, the Rooskies have ’em too. One sub can totally destroy any country on earth, pretty cool.
Big scare now is both sides planning how to use tactical nukes during conventional combat. Most experts say it only ends in a full nuclear exchange. Military leaders are usually the stupidest people in any nation, scares me to hear them talking about ‘little nukes’.
Wrapping your house in plastic won’t protect you from fallout. It’s called radiation because it is radiating, little subnuclear particles that shoot through your roof and walls like they aren’t there. It takes four feet of packed earth to protect you from the 1st 2 weeks of fallout.

The WWII Japanese who did survive had many medical issues. Some had a slow painful living death. Sure the next generations took hold. The initial fallout survivors then were toast. Their initial period is what we will also experience too.
With today’s society many are unprepared for the end results. Will the survivors be able to hold on to their supplies. How many “Zombies” will be knocking at our doors. Threatening to take the supplies? Do you have enough defenses to hold off several attempts?
Books are written on this subject as with survival topics. How can we be sure the information is accurate?
We have people recopy other book information into their books that may have misinterpreted data. Do the experts have the actual experiences or fantasy dreams?
All this is our discernment of what is best for us. We can learn all the information we want. It comes down to what we do at that moment it happens. That will be our truth to surviving that period of time.
Will we have enough supplies to be safe? When the supplies are slim, will the outside supplies be safe to use?
How many people actually have the tools and use the equipment. What happens if the equipment fails, are there ways to tell if the stuff is safe?
Chernobyl still has restricted areas, recent documentaries show animals have comeback. But their quality of life is not normal, there’s still is contamination residuals. Plant life came back, how long until the ground is safe to farm crops?
Manufacturing will take years to get the supply chain going. Heck look at the current supply chain issues currently happening. And the recent baby formula shortage debacle.
Will the survivors have true community spirit to help others?
Can we really help others at the expense of our own safety?
We look at and philosophize all this.

This article could right on the money as far as targets go. But to me I do not think it will be all out nuclear war. What I think is if a nuclear war happens, it will be a limited nuclear war with a following conventional war. The targets in that case will be the main 5 military targets and Washingto DC where our government is located. They will want to take out as many officials as they can to cause chaos. Then they would use conventional weapons for main attack.
There is many reasons I believe this. The main one is who ever the attacker is knows we will counter with the same amount or more warheads and that their distruction is a certainty in a full exchange. Then why would they use full exchange when there would be nothing left and could not be used for 100’s of years even if certain parts of the world suvived.

First off the targets would depend on who is attacking. The size of the warhead determines the size of the area effected and the radious of the blast. Then the wind determines how far and what direction the fallout is taken. As for second attacks it would be useless for them to attack the same areas so that would not play a part other than giving the data on that spread. Most countries have less big nuclear weapons then they have smaller warheads. So any map they can give could only give the target and not the area effected. I was raised during this time and had the alerts. But back then is different from now. You see back then there was only selective few sizes of warheads now there is so many different sizes that you would never have enough intel to make the kind of map you want.
People don’t look at the first strike in one area also goes further with wind patterns.

Was there a window to this classroom? A window is an extremely easy access and viewpoint, even from distance with proper optics. DoD would have performed a fast RECON, even using a “periscope” type optics to evaluate the room from various angles to get real time visual info and use the Comm’s gear they DID NOT drop or leave behind and provide info to the oversight shooters to take out the target as quickly as feasible, which would not be 40-60 minutes later after arrival.
If the doors are too tough, what about through the adjoining restroom? what about breaching the walls? through the ceiling?

In my opinion it will not be a full scale nuclear war. There will be several vital targets hit in the US, just enough to weaken the country considerably and cause chaos. China is buying so much farm property here, so it will not be destroyed or rendered useless because of radioactivity. Chinese troops will come in to “help” after a lot of people have died from exposure to radiation, exposure to the elements, starvation, lack of medication, etc. you get the general picture. As everyone can see this admin has deep ties to China, first time the Chinese New Year has been celebrated in the WH, plus numerous other obvious ties. Whoever is in charge after the dust clears, pun intended, will have to objections to Chinese “help”. The truly sad and tragic thing here is that all of the men who died fighting to form the country in the past, and keep the US free, have died in vain.

If there is a nuke war, I myself do not want to survive, the challenges to find and maintain a clean drinking source. 3 days no water your dead. Then you have to eat, good luck. Everything will be poisoned. Nuke plants will melt and the fallout would be horrendous. So I hope if it does happen one lands directly on my house so I don’t have to try to live through the horrors that will follow.
