In a country as vast and diverse as the United States, it’s important to be aware of the potential dangers that can lurk in certain areas.
While disaster can strike anywhere, there are certain states that have a higher risk factor than others. From natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes to man-made catastrophes, these states should be approached with caution.
In this article, we will explore the reasons why you should think twice before venturing into these danger zones.
By understanding the unique risks associated with each state, you can make informed decisions and take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
So, buckle up and prepare for a harrowing journey through the top five states that should be avoided at all costs when disaster strikes.
California
California is often hailed as a vibrant and diversified state, attracting people from all walks of life. Governed by liberal ideals for decades, California is definitely not a welcoming place to live for preppers who value, cherish, and wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
This state has a history of facing a variety of natural disasters that pose significant risks to its residents.

From hurricanes and tropical storms to wildfires and earthquakes, the state is no stranger to nature’s wrath. These events often result in widespread power outages, flooding, property damage, and even loss of life. It is crucial for residents and visitors alike to stay informed about potential threats and have a plan in place to ensure their safety.
California’s vast population coupled with aging infrastructure has the potential to exacerbate the problems faced during emergencies.
The state’s power grid, road networks, and water storage systems are subject to strain under extreme conditions, leaving preppers reliant on infrastructure that may fail. Preppers may face challenges in obtaining permits for building alternative structures, digging water wells, or installing reliable renewable energy systems.
Additionally, strict zoning laws can prevent individuals from using their land to its fullest potential for cultivation or raising livestock, hindering self-sustainability.
Hawaii
Hawaii has strict gun laws, requiring individuals to obtain a permit to purchase, possess, or carry firearms. Off-grid living is also regulated due to zoning laws, building codes, and limited land availability.
The state is highly susceptible to hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and other natural disasters, which can pose significant challenges for survivalists.
When thinking about the ideal location for preppers or homesteaders to live, Hawaii might not be the first place that comes to mind. While the tropical paradise offers breathtaking scenery and year-round pleasant weather, it presents unique geographical, environmental, and socio-economic challenges for self-reliant individuals.
One of the biggest challenges for preppers and survival homesteaders in Hawaii is the limited availability of land. With a land area of approximately 10,931 square miles and a growing population, finding ample space to establish a self-sufficient homestead, garden, or livestock operation can be incredibly challenging.
⇒ How to Make a Year-Round Self-Sustaining Garden in Any Climate
This limited land availability often leads to high land prices, making it difficult for individuals with limited financial resources to secure their own piece of land.
Hawaii’s geographical location exposes it to various natural disasters. From hurricanes and tsunamis to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, the state faces ongoing threats that can disrupt the self-sufficiency of preppers and homesteaders.
While there are emergency preparedness measures in place, the rapid onset and unpredictable nature of these disasters can severely impact supply chains, infrastructure, and overall self-reliance efforts.
While Hawaii offers a lush environment for growing tropical fruits and vegetables, it heavily relies on imported resources to meet its population’s needs.
A majority of food, water, and energy are imported from the mainland United States or other countries. This reliance on external resources poses a significant challenge for those pursuing self-sufficiency, as disruptions in transportation or supply chains could leave individuals without essential supplies.
Furthermore, essential supplies like seeds, building materials, and hardware may not be readily available or cost-effective due to the distance and limited market size. The extra cost of shipping and transportation can significantly impact the feasibility of establishing and sustaining a self-sufficient lifestyle on the islands.
Louisiana
Louisiana, situated in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, is known for its unique culture, vibrant cities, and natural beauty.
However, when it comes to prepping or survivalism, the state poses several challenges due to its geographical and climatic characteristics, vulnerability to natural disasters, potential lack of essential resources, and certain legal limitations.
Louisiana, commonly referred to as the “Hurricane State,” faces multiple natural disasters. The state’s unique geography, with its extensive coastline, exposes it to a high risk of storm surge, inland flooding, and erosion.

The humid subtropical climate of Louisiana also brings its share of challenges, including high humidity, frequent heavy rainfall, and the potential for tornadoes.
The state’s vast wetlands and dependence on agriculture make food production vulnerable to natural disasters, potentially leading to shortages and food insecurity during extended emergencies.
Another aspect to consider is the legal and regulatory limitations that may hinder preparedness efforts in Louisiana. While the state encourages individual preparedness, there are restrictions on certain activities such as water collection and firearm ownership.
For example, Louisiana has limited regulations on water rights, which can limit a prepper’s ability to stockpile water supplies legally.
Additionally, firearms laws may be subject to interpretation, potentially impacting a survivalist’s self-defense plans or options for hunting food during an emergency.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island, the smallest state in the United States, offers a unique experience for preppers or homesteaders. While the state presents several advantages for those practicing self-sufficiency, it also poses significant challenges.
Rhode Island has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, including an “assault weapons” ban, limitations on magazine capacity, and a stringent requirement for a license to carry firearms.
Off-grid living may also be challenging due to zoning laws and building codes.
Rhode Island is vulnerable to hurricanes, severe storms, and flooding, which can present difficulties for survivalists.
The state’’s geography presents a particular constraint for individuals seeking self-sufficiency. With an area of just 1,034 square miles, the state lacks extensive spaces for large-scale cultivation.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), only around 168,000 acres of land in Rhode Island are potentially suitable for farming, which accounts for just approximately 9% of the overall land area.
Restrictions on land use and building codes may limit the ability to establish certain self-sufficient practices, such as keeping livestock or constructing alternative dwellings.
New York
New York, a bustling metropolis often associated with opportunity and progress, presents unique challenges for individuals interested in prepping or homesteading within its urban confines.
With limited space, zoning restrictions, high living costs, and strict building codes, all but possibly the northern rural areas of the state and not friendly to preppers or survival homesteaders.
New York has restrictive gun laws, including an “assault weapons” ban, limitations on magazine capacity, and a requirement for a license to carry firearms.
Off-grid living is also heavily regulated, with zoning laws that may hinder individuals from living self-sufficiently.
New York is susceptible to hurricanes, flooding, snowstorms, and severe weather events, which can impact a survivalist’s ability to sustain themselves.
Strict regulations dictate land use, prohibiting certain agricultural activities within urban areas. Zoning restrictions often prioritize commercial developments, leaving little room for rural or urban farming or alternative electricity generation systems.
New York’s rigorous building codes can hinder the construction of structures necessary for homesteading or prepping activities.
The emphasis on safety measures and adherence to standards may pose challenges for those seeking to build storage areas for supplies, rainwater harvesting systems, or other crucial infrastructure required for self-sufficiency.
Connecticut
Connecticut offers a picturesque landscape, a rich history, and proximity to bustling cities. However, for those interested in prepping and homesteading, the state poses unique challenges and disadvantages.
This state also has strict gun laws, including an “assault weapons” ban, restrictions on magazine capacity, and a requirement for a permit to carry a handgun.
The state also has regulations on off-grid living, with building codes and zoning laws that may limit self-sufficiency.
Related: How Much Land Do You Need to Be Self-Sufficient?
Connecticut is vulnerable to hurricanes, severe storms, and blizzards, which can disrupt essential services and hinder survivalist efforts.
Connecticut is the third smallest state in the United States, with a high population density and limited land availability. Finding suitable land for homesteading can be challenging, especially in areas close to urban centers.
Moreover, the cost of land is typically higher compared to states with greater expanses of rural land, making it economically challenging for some preppers and homesteaders.
It has stringent building codes and regulations that may pose challenges for preppers and homesteaders. These codes often focus on safety and environmental concerns, restricting the use of alternative energy systems, water collection, and structures.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts has strict gun laws, restrictions on magazine capacity, and a requirement for a license to carry a handgun. The state also has strict building codes and zoning laws that can pose challenges for off-grid living.
Massachusetts is susceptible to hurricanes, blizzards, and severe weather events, which can affect survivalists’ ability to sustain themselves. The “Blizzard of ’78” in Massachusetts caused significant damage and widespread power outages, demonstrating the impact of severe weather on the region.
Massachusetts presents unique geographical challenges for preppers and homesteaders. The state’s densely populated urban areas offer limited space for self-sufficient living. The high cost of land and scarcity of available acreage make it difficult for individuals to establish self-sustaining homesteads.
This state is known for its strict regulations, which pose obstacles for preppers and homesteaders alike. Regulations related to zoning, building codes, and livestock restrictions often clash with the principles of self-sufficiency and preparedness.
New Jersey
New Jersey has strict gun laws, requiring individuals to obtain a permit to purchase, possess, or carry firearms.
The state also has restrictive off-grid living regulations, including building codes and zoning laws that can make it difficult for individuals to live off the grid. New Jersey is vulnerable to hurricanes, flooding, and winter storms, which can cause power outages and other challenges for survivalists.
Living off the grid, or pursuing a self-sufficient lifestyle, has become a popular choice for many individuals seeking resilience and independence in the face of uncertain times.
However, not all locations are conducive to prepping or homesteading. New Jersey poses several disadvantages for those interested in these lifestyles.
One of the primary challenges of living in New Jersey is its densely populated urban areas. With a population of over 9 million people, finding affordable, suitable land for homesteading or prepping purposes can be extremely challenging.
Related: 8 Homesteading Items You Should Get From The Dollar Store
The state’s geographical limitations are another obstacle. Despite New Jersey’s relatively small size, it boasts a diverse topography that presents challenges for self-sufficiency.
The state primarily consists of coastal plains, heavily populated urban areas, and the hilly terrain of the Highlands region. These geographical features limit the availability of arable land, suitable for farming or establishing a homestead.
Furthermore, New Jersey’s regulatory environment poses additional obstacles. The state has stringent building codes, zoning restrictions, and a range of permits required for various activities related to prepping or homesteading.
These regulatory factors can make it difficult for individuals to establish off-grid housing, farm animals, install alternative energy systems, or construct necessary structures for self-sufficiency.
Natural disasters can wreak havoc on communities, causing loss of life, property damage, and long-term economic and emotional distress. It’s crucial to understand the impact these events can have before delving into the specific states that are prone to them.
Whether it’s a hurricane tearing through coastal areas, a tornado ripping through the heartland, or an earthquake shaking the foundations of a region, natural disasters can leave a lasting mark on the affected regions.
The devastation caused by these events often takes years, if not decades, to fully recover from, making prevention and preparedness essential.

i live in southwest missouri area. the clos andest town is 400 people. there is no permits to obtain when remodeling a house and if you need a shed just build it. land is pretty cheap, we bought a 4 bedroom house with 5 acres for 70,000 dollars a few years ago. our neighbors are of like minded as us. we do have to deal with tornados and ice in the winter and lately a week or two of brutally cold temps. the record heat this summer is not fun either.
Completely agree, love MO. Great gun laws, and minimal, if any (in rural areas) zoning regulations. We live on 4 acres in NE MO and have 93 acres to bug out to in SW MO, if needed.
Living in the desert States we need guns for protection, crawling snakes, the 2-legged snakes, drug cartels, homeless, definitely illegals and general dirtbags.
In California, the governor ‘Newscum’ wants to do a the State and all 50 State’s revision of a new gun amendment.
This political criminal that destroyed California wants to run our lives into the ground like California. He and cackling hen Harris are one of the same ilk. ‘Newscum’ is better at speaking liberalism than her.
You all vote for ‘Newscum’, it is a death warrant to America’s freedoms as we know it today. https://www*gov*ca*gov/2023/06/08/28th-amendment/
“Proposed a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to enshrine fundamental, broadly supported gun safety measures into law.”

You are correct about Nussolini, and he has all 81 million of Brandon’s mail in voters behind him, not to mention all the new immigrants from the southern line in the sand formerly called a border, as well. His family is even worse that the one from Delaware.
Newscum isn’t the only politician to destroy Calif. Pretty much every Gov. Since Pete Wilson has had a hand in it’s destruction, but You’re right he’s a POS for sure so go ahead and hate on Newscum he sucks big time. Every Bad State to live in during an emergency is on the Coast, Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf, makes no diff. High winds coming off the water, storm surge, In Calif. particular Case Earthquakes too, not as much in Ore. or Wash, though I don’t see any reason why there Couldn’t be though the San Andreas Fault meets the coast just South of Eureka in Calif. but that’s somewhat close to Ore, and Who knows what’s off the Coast underwater. Then There’s always the Sunamis, but frankly I’ve never seen one where I live which is right in the middle between LA and SF on the coast. And Newscum is a Gunaphobe, but I’ll bet he wears one a lot of the time. Do as I say not as I do, Calif. Politician Motto. Anyway yeah Calif. the worst thing is you can be very prepared for everything easily except for Water, that’s a problem unless you plan to storing a whole lot on site. Hell it’s even illegal to collect rain water in a lot of places.
I live in Missouri as well and work in real estate. You won’t find anything that price now.
Moved from CT to MA and ended moving in Maine. On the line of midcoast and central and it is great. Much wildlife, wild edibles, easy water access and slack building codes if any at all. Who cares about the grid going down to our kind.
Only one state is weather related. The remainder are political. That speaks volumes.
Actually RH, CT NY, NJ< MASS are prone to hurrucanes as well
I’d like to introduce you to Maryland. The “hold my beer” state.
Why is ‘assault weapons’ written in double quotes? The term was coined by firearm industry (primarily to stimulate sales).
BS, liar
Actually it was coined in the 70s by anti gun groups trying to find the perfect description of a semi auto RIFLE that would scare the most people possible. Especially those who know NOTHING about guns and only listen to the anti gun media to get their info ABOUT said guns. The FBI keeps track of deaths by guns that anyone can find on line and they don’t have a “assault weapons ” category for SEMI AUTO RIFLES such as the AR15. They are RIFLES!! PERIOD!! And KNIVES kill about 4 times as many people as RIFLES do. Look it up on the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) .
Armalite Rifle is the original term of the AR gun. Not the gun hatter’s term of assault rifle nonsense. The AR-15 is non-automatic, single trigger pull. The M-16 design, referred by gun hater’s is the automatic version. Lawyers and activist like to muddy the waters by fearmongering tactics.
The first thing for young kids, adults are hunter safety classes to learn the proper handling and safety of guns. The liberal’s sometimes leave their guns out in plain site where their kids shoot others at school. Then the victim’s survivors claim the gun manufacturer is at fault, BS!
Blame the idiot shooter not the gun manufacturer for that incident.
Get G. Soros and son’s State DA’s, for promoting criminal revolving door policies. Vote them out! Put the shooter down or in prison according truth, justice and the American way. Not the 2 or 3 tiered legal system since they let Hillary off for her crimes to currently Hunter’s BS sweetheart deals.
“ArmaLite, or Armalite, is an American small arms engineering company, formed in the early 1950s, in Hollywood, California.” At least the pedophile Hollyweed area made AR’s a good choice for us. Movies, forget about it.
Most of Hollyweed’s movies are agenda driven anymore.
Wrong.
Wow, that comment really brought the snowflakes out, I was just asking a question!
I do apologize though, I dug a little further into the etymology and it seems ‘assault rifle’ is a direct translation of ‘Sturmgewehr’, as used by Hitler when approving the production of the StG44
Good try, NOT!
Ha, Ha, Ha!
SIG-Hi, y’all, Ha, Ha!
You clearly are projecting your own issues onto others, as you’re obviously the snowflake, not them. And of course, you’re just trying to irritate people. But most people educated about firearms know that a true assault rifle has full-automatic firing capability, while semi-automatics (AR-15s) do not. The corrupt news media has perpetuated that descriptor for the AR-15 for propaganda purposes, as another responder verifies. Don’t have a meltdown, Snorkers.
No the ter.m assault rifles has nothing to do with ar-15 and other semiautomatic rifles. It refers to firearms with the capability to fire fully auto. But the anti-gun tyrants have applied the name to most semiautomatic rifles and carbines. They use this to make them sound scary. The whole point being missed here is the second amendment does not give us the right to own firearms. That is a birth right of free people. The second is to prohibited moron and tyrants from infringing on those rights.
We should own assault rifles
Actually the term ‘assault weapons’ was coined on accident by a Liberal News Reporter talking about a mass shooting with an AR Platform weapon. Soon all media were using the term assault weapon. Later all AR style weapons would be reported as a fully automatic weapons.
I’ve lived in California for most of my 75 years on the planet and what you say is true, but — hurricanes?? When and where?? Never heard of one here. I suspect the frequency of hurricanes in California is about the same as it is for earthquakes in states that actually have hurricanes, if that makes sense.
Right on Nora, living in SoCal all of my years, just slightly fewer that you, we’ve gotten the tail end of Tropical Storms at worst, and those only during a severe El Niño season. That has been twice in my life thus far. A lot of the other tales of woe about this place are true, floods during monsoon season, and mudslides after fires, then again the government and the mostly lefty authorities, at least in the biggest and most liberal areas, are so corrupt, that when any SHTF scenarios come a knocking, they will mostly be looking out for themselves and not worrying who has an extra can of SPAM and bottle of water in the cupboard. Many smaller towns are more understanding than one is lead to believe and are a little more tolerant about such things than one might think. Like where I dwell is not zoned for certain critters, yet some folks still raise them, grow stuff, or even save rain water. Or so I’ve been told 😉
Folks can have their tornadoes, ice storms, and ungodly high humidity, I’d rather have the earthquakes personally. When it comes to natural disasters, in a quake for instance, at least you know where to dig to find your stuff; with those twisters, all your stuff is spread over two counties or who knows where, we just park one vehicle away from structures down here and keep the brush clearance rules that are recommended, just in case. On the other hand a lot of tornado alley has the best BBQ places going and that is one department where SoCal falls really short.
cat 4 hurricane is heading for southern cal as we speak. Most will hit around baja but they do happen just not often
They JUST had one yesterday.
It was God’s Will and my efforts to get a pension from military service as well as 23 years in state prison as a guard. Not anyone else. It will be the same as I defend those provisions against everyone who wants to take it. It’s all paid off. Me and God alone.
The past enlisted military who did retire out never really got rich from the pension. Depending in which State we reside, we, they, us have had to get a second job. To make ends meet especially in Biden’s great Biden economics clown world.
Can’t what it is like for the enlisted who have to put with the feminized gender crowd. That are destroying our fighting capability. The pentagon brass needs a lot of house cleaning for starters.
If we had the WWII generation attitude do we think the Afghan disgrace would have happened? We got a LOW-T leadership in charge. We got good leaders being shackled by the DC Swamp school of management today.
Got rich lol no
Religion in today’s world is not what most people grew up with. In the 1970’s we had hippie type Jesus freaks Bible thumping people. Being aggressive annoying jerks. Religion and politics are two of the worst things to be a buzzkill. The average American usually believes in God or the supreme being. And some go to Sunday Christian services. Then we got the extremes of religion and politics who are really annoying.
We got RINO’s – “Religion In Name Only” in politics that horns-waggle taxpayer’s out of their hard earned money. To Ukraine, Illegals and liberal homeless housing projects. Support the homeless American vet’s first not last to the Biden illegal’s first club.
What about us, we know how to spend our money wisely they don’t.
Maybe the real defunding is due at the IRS, FBI, Education dept., Home land security, the wealthy congress millionaire’s club of retirement privileges. Taxpayer’s paid protective security to the elites. While the rest of us are having gun rights being progressively taken away.
Time to clean house or loose our America!
I live in West Virginia. It is a rural state where you can pretty much do as you please on your own land. Low property taxes, lots of green hills with a large variety of natural recurses. It has clean air with mild winters and light to moderate snow fall. Summers are lots of 70- 85 degree days, a few above 90 but not many. Good growing season. Very few gun laws and a right to carry with no permit. 50th state in violent crime for more than 30 years in a roe. Good hunting and fishing through out. if you like a country way of living with friendly neighbors and small towns this might be the place you are looking for. If you are city minded and don’t care who your neighbors are you should look elsewhere. We do not want transplants that flee what they don’t like but bringing those same things with them and want to change the way things are here. We are a very red state politically. Some things to think about.
https://thehill*com/changing-america/sustainability/climate-change/584502-new-study-says-china-controlled-its-weather/
That is a great explanation of our weather patterns. And possible what may have happened in Maui. And all the mainland wildfires in recent years.
You forgot to add Oregon?!! My son and his family live there and they do want out!! Really the most of Oregon is GOPs it is just the big cities that are Demo’s!!! And you know how they cheat in elections!!!
The war has always been since ancient Roman days. Cities versus the Farmers, people who live in the sticks.
America’s cities need a purging physically and spiritually. Not Bible thumping of religious quotes. We need to give like it’s been before. Give the honest people a 24-48 hour warning. Then go in an clean up the mess, liberals and all who are the Marxist of ill repute sludge in the cities. Then people can reclaim their homes back from the scum, the human garbage slim.
It’s called tough love. The remaining slime can get help, but not the help liberals like to do in Blue Sanctuary States.
Take the union misguided protestors and environmentalist put them to hard work. Cleaning up the cities they destroyed, along with antifa and BLM supporter, protestors. If they don’t cooperate then give them a court hearing and jail terms for the crimes they committed. Burning, looting and murder of innocent American citizens. Truth, justice and the American way. Not the deep state, DC Swamp way of Marxism today.
If a state, county or city is run by democrats that’s the only info you need to know where NOT to live either now or WHEN the SHTF. The ones in charge ( notice I didn’t say leaders) only think about themselves and screw everyone else. That’s bot parties but the GOP is not AS bad when you look at things like home prices, food, energy etc. If you live in a blue state forget about them protecting your RIGHTS as in the Bill Of RIGHTS. It’s not the Bill of SUGGESTIONS. If the left had its wY rhe Constitution would be burned and they would simply use the communist manifest for your “rights” or lack thereof. If you haven’t read Rules For Radicals you need to .
The liberals, Marxist or whatever we call them are the majority rule. More likely the majority mindset of the Demoncrat run State and cities. But not in suburbs and the rural areas where people really work. Cities have become cesspools of union, environmental mandates of the clueless in charge.
They demand covid shots or loose your right to work. Trump got the ball rolling, but and butt, the lib’s like Dr. Fauci took advantage of an untested trial bioweapon vaccine that has caused significant health issues. The bloatware government made obvious mistake of heavy handed political moves.
Lockdowns were a psychological test to see how gullible the American public is. We the public failed; to question authority always.
Yes. Only 8 governors chose to keep their states open and free. We Lived under the DeSantis hell…. …lockdowns stay at home orders that ruined lives and businesses. Anyone saying it didn’t happen is a liar. We couldn’t leave the state to go to family that needed us. Ultimately, after 17 years we sold in 2020, and moved away. Only fools are moving there. Hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, through out the state. Dense population, taxes, and RD signed a red flag law into effect. If you are 18-21 you cannot own a firearm. He signed that law into effect as well. Young adult women are not allowed to defend themselves.
brothers, sisters, we are not each others enemy. we are not lib-lefties. we don’t silence their voice, like they do, we all know who the snowflakes and trolls are? so just ignore them.
also please remember that several of our states may be 98% of the state is us and 2% of the state is them but they control the state due to density of population in critical areas. there are some good folks everywhere.
keep your head/moral high and don’t let them get you down. look ahead and attack the problem, look for the solution not just to bitch(fun but not efficient)
hope to see ya’ll on the other side of ’24.
California isn’t what websites like this one always claim. Hurricanes? Come on. There’s going to be ONE weak hurricane coming to Cali on Monday, and it’ll be the first in generations. California’s generally protected by its cooler waters but as we’ve all heard the Pacific has been warming. Anyway, I tried moving away from here, rented out the house for 4x the mortgage, and absolutely hated how backward all of the supposed “great” GOP states were. Like most Californians, I skedaddled right back. I have so many friends and neighbors here, and not ONE of them was born here. They all came from the other 49 states.
Cali back over 50 years ago or once upon a time when conservatives run the Sate well. Neighbors did care about the cities, crime. Illegals came to work in the fields and eventually become legal Americans.
The 1970’s were probably the real Golden Years before the decline into “liberalism is a mental disorder.”
They print voter ballots in several foreign languages then require new immigrants to speak, read, write in English. Beginning was the double standard of English/Spanish signs. Currently they got Middle Eastern scribble business signs in the crumbling homeless Cali cities.
You think you were in the Middle East. And yes they said Asian drivers were bad. They got Middle Eastern drivers taking up the slack. Driving like they were in the desert. Found that out visiting a relative in Cali, scary stuff going on there.
A shame real conservatives living there can’t afford to move to other States. They are stuck, a lot are seniors who want to leave.
So do we do a purging of the scum in major cities of the Sanctuary States? Or continue to hope for the best from these liberals in charge?
So nothing but thumbs down for this opinion?
I live in a area of northern california that has some of the best hunting and fishing in the country. The scenery is great and the county I live in makes it easy to get a concealed carry permit. There is plenty of water a great growing season and great weather. I do get snow in the winter but since I love snow that’s not a problem for me. People need to understand california is a huge state with most people concentrated in 2 areas. and all those other areas are NOT liberals. We supply 40% of veggies and fruits to the rest of the country. Are the second largest growers of rice and supply a huge amount of the beef and chicken that people eat. Yeah the rest of the politics suck but to be honest it rarely effects a large portion of this state
Ironically, Hillary (with a lot of hot air) ran up the coast of California and flooded areas that barely ever see water (“It never rains in California, but girl let me warn ya, it pours, man it pours.”) I will just mention that Illinois is screwed too.
Thank Goodness North Carolina wasn’t on this list. We live in Florida and are moving to NC ASAP. Bad things are coming to this country, and you need to be surrounded by like-minded people. Florida was great 20 years ago, but with all the people moving here it’s too crowded for us, can’t grow anything and all the new people don’t know how to drive. See Ya’
That was said years ago about the lousy drivers in Cali too.
The problem Cali lib’s bring their commie politics with them. Raise the real estate prices. Whine about how bad it was in Cali and continue the same old liberal mindset in their new State.
Florida will become another Cali if the locals don’t get a grip on their politics there.
We left Florida after 17 years….late 2020. Don’t need any pig governor locking us down again like DeSantis does. 8 govs chose to keep their states open and free. Those are the true leaders.

Australia represent! This is about US states, but there’s some similar considerations when pondering where in AU.
The recent border closures in WA has shown what can happen with you are the most isolated state and most isolated city in the Southern Hemisphere and you want to have solid control. There’s pros and cons to this – WA was able to live a very carefree lifestyle in it’s little bubble and most people inside the bubble were very very happy (evidence: the election results), those outside who wanted in were not. Food for thought.
The biggest threat outside of that you face on a state by state based review of Australia is around access to resources – primarily water. Australia is not exactly hospitable, and if you think you can throw a few seeds in the ground and water them dream on. All our best ‘market garden’ land has been concreted over as suburbs and anything close to reliable water is lost to the urban jungle. This means in a long scale disaster access to food is going to be hampered, and people in cities are going to be challenging.
Moving further out presents some serious water issues though, and our food gardening anywhere more than about 100km out of most major cities looks like Arizona/ desert gardening. (I’m always amused when people overseas look at AU and think there’s all this land to be populated)
Other risks: There’s serious cyclone belt stuff happening top of WA and top of QLD, if you can withstand them it’s fine (and you should be able to), but growing crops in a traditional way (large scale monoculture, adapted European diet) is probably fraught. However if you adapt to local foods, mixed farming methods and adapt for monsoonal rains, cyclone risks and higher temperatures it could be a great place to consider being off the grid. Total lack of services and supports likely though.
Other risks mentioned like weapons laws in AU most are fairly similar (WA is more strict than elsewhere, but overall the difference between states is minimal compared to the overarching high level of controls), risk of political interference on ownership of land etc is still kept at bay by having a King/control of land title etc is limited for the states, and risks of army taking control are fairly low (because our army is small in size compared to the landmass to be controlled). Most local councils have a habit of sticking their nose in to everything you do and this seems universal AU wide.
Go where makes sense to you, conditions are similar across much of the country, but be aware if you head west you are choosing to live in an area that can be fairly easily isolated (likewise NT, SA and FNQ to be realistic). If you want to be undiscoverable or deeply off grid and on a back road block then you’ll have to be very resourceful and independent, but you can easily find such land. It won’t come with water, and you’ll have to work out how to a) collect enough water for yourself and store it (a LOT of water), and b) how to hide this in a sparse desert environment (not a lot of tree cover).
It is ALWAYS a horrible mistake to equate New York City with Upstate and/or Central New York. You really sound ridiculous and extremely uninformed when you write off Upstate New York as if we have nothing to offer other than the population of NYC, illegal immigrants, and stiff laws. Well, we do have high taxes and stiff gun laws, but they are not a total decision maker or breaker, as there are some mediating factors. NYS has tons to offer, like easy access to water in many locations, lots of fishing, even famous Salmon fishing areas, tons of vineyards and orchards to buy food from, loads of even organic/safer food farms all over the place and so much more! We buy our organically raised, gras finished hamburger from a farmer friend for only $5.50/lb. and they often let me trade Essential Oils for what meat we would like to buy.
Anyone that equates New York CITY with New York STATE is totally uneducated and brain-dead!! We can grow tons of food during the growing season, too! Last year I harvested 31 butternut squash from 3 tiny hills. Yesterday, I picked over 4 quarts of the BEST EVER BLUEBERRIES in less than 2 hours, and they are not even peaking yet!! We live in Central New York State, which has the nickname of “the Fruit Basket of the East”, because our county is only #2 for apples grown in the USA…and there’s SO MUCH MORE! Land to buy is plentiful as are the deer and geese that live on the land and it’s water….SO MUCH MORE! Time to stop equating our wonderful, lovely, food-producing part of NYS with that dirty, dangerous and smoggy NYC area where people drive like the devil and don’t even care if they ram you from behind when you stop for a pedestrian crossing the street! We live 6 hrs. North of that nightmare location. So don’t tell me NYS is a creepy, dirty, rotten place to live! You must be really stupid!! Yes, we get snow like most northern states and yesterday we even got the tail end of Hur. Beryl, too; but it didn’t amount to anything in our area even though the National Weather Service was scaring people like crazy!! All we got was some extra noise in the sky and maybe a 1/2″ of light rain!! Even in areas where there was a tornado, all they had to do afterward was clean up a tree that fell! NOT at all so bad as predicted!!
FORGOT TO SAY: AND you can still afford to buy a house in our area, as well! LOTS of great advantages around here!!
